Are those the two under 30 players who impress you the most? I agree with Burns, not sold on Hovland's short game yet (but he does have the greatest smile on tour). There are better known, more accomplished guys still in their 20s we aren't mentioning. Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, even Matthew Fitzpatrick now.

Burns and Hovland have plenty of runway.

Will is a 2nd place at St. Andrews away from completing the career grand slam of 2nds in majors, that Louis Oosthuizen is a proud member of.  Other players just in random that have that honor as well...

  • Jack Nicklaus (many multiples of 2nds at every single major)
  • Greg Norman
  • Craig Wood
  • Tom Watson
  • Arnold Palmer
  • Phil Mickelson

In case you were wondering, Tiger Woods never finished in 2nd place at the Open Championship.

Just for the record, this is really not a dig at Will for what he has accomplished in such a short amount of time.  I am very confident that Will will not only win a major, but multiple majors if he stays healthy over the course of what is a very young career.

He has to do it all in one season to be in the same league as as Rickies historic achievement.

What about Niemann ?

The young Chilean, nicknamed Joaco, who spent 40+ weeks as the best amateur in the world and then turned pro in 2018?

Once acclimated to the tour, I expect good things, NOT great things.  Needs to work on overall ball striking, capitalizing on 5-par holes and sand play.

Also, not a big fan of Chilean Sea Bass.

I prefer Sablefish.

I think Will jinxed himself when he cut his hair so people wouldn’t call him Happy Gilmore’s caddie any more.

According to Will, he's 3 shots away from being a 3 time major champion.

My favorite quote from him following the US Open was referencing his near-miss putts to win three of the last five majors.

He said "I'd give a lot of money for another inch and a half."

Same, kid. Same.

It's more than putting.

Please elucidate?  He is one of the best ball strikers on tour.

I’m with the marriage counselor on this one.  Seems like a very nice and mature young man and he has shown he has Tour ability.  However, when he’s out there, in contention or not, his body language is “I hope this works” rather than “hand me a 7 iron and pull the pin.”

Then there is that ‘solid as over-cooked pasta’ putting stroke.

I’d like to see him do well but at this point am not sure he can win the Sanderson Farms - let alone a major.

Which pro tells his caddie to pull the pin when he is hitting a 7 iron?  As to him winning...you won't have to wait long.

You will be reading about him for a long time to come.  The putting issues are, to paraphrase another, TRANSITORY!  And IMO Will's putting issues are really EXACTLY that.

The messed up part is that he isn't even a bad putter overall. He's actually a good putter, but he's some sort of mental block away from being a great putter and it seems to show up at the worst times. He was 4th in Strokes Gained Putting at the US Open

I agree but the naysayers only care about WINS.  I am sure ALL the players had ONE bad putt during the four days. But only the ones on hole 63 to 72 matter to those naysayers. It doesn't matter when that stroke happens. ALL of them count the same!

Yah, Will's good to go and should, as you stated in your OP, bag a few if he stays healthy. His biggest challenge will not be physical, however his mental state will be critical, so hopefully he does not develop that "always the bride's maid, never the bride" mentality. That can be a deal breaker and when it has taken hold, the individual doesn't even realize it as it occurs subconsciously, then will manifest itself in conscious decisions, swings and strokes.

Probably the Greatest Player to have this horrid affliction was Sam, with the US Open(4 Runner-Ups). We talked about it one day, or more accurately, Pete and I sat and listened as Sam basically ran through easily 15-18 of the Opens that followed his final hole collapse in the 1939 US Open at Philadelphia CC when he believed that he needed a birdie 4 to tie Byron Nelson, when in fact a par 5 would have given him the victory outright and a bogey, which had he just hit a prudent second shot out of a vanilla fairway bunker, would never have entered the picture, would have tied and put him in a Play-Off.

Relying on a fan's inaccurate information, Sam Played a "hero" shot out of the fairway bunker, jumping on a 2 1/2W trying to make the green, which he topped and ended up in a ditch, followed by a shot that landed in a bunker under the lip and he went on to score an 8, which dropped him to 5th. As he told us that day, and Pete(his Bro for those not familiar) said that Sam had never told him this before, however his head was never the same in EVERY Open to follow. Of course we had to listen to 15-18 examples😂😂. Put it this way, I was stone *ss sober when we sat down and I was buzzed when Sam had finished😂😂

So, absent that potential pitfall, Will's got all of the tangibles/intangibles🤙

Holy crap, I didn't realize Norman lost all 4 in playoffs.  Ouch.

In 1986 he had the saturday slam. led or co led all 4 majors... his second shot on 17 at the masters that year is probably a top 10 shot all time, very seveesque. He blew it a hole later... he could have had 6-7 majors with a little luck and better decision making but some were just taken from him outright in vicious ways

Norman was close to denying history but that 2nd shot on the 72nd hole though...
