Which past or present golfer influenced your swing the most

Recommended Posts

Which pro golfer influenced your swing the most? For me it’s definitely Ben Hogan. The simplicity and repeatability of his swing is something I strive for. Something powerful but still repeatable shot after shot, year after year. Who influenced you most on your personal swing journey to perfection?

1. Jack Nicklaus - Came of age in his prime, tried to copy him

2. Sam Snead - Wanted to swing like him.  Saw him up close in person play my home club when I was about 14-15, he was up in Northern Michigan with friends and came out to play Belvedere.  Word got out that Sam was playing and a bunch of people from town came out to watch him, I think I caught them on #4 and followed the rest of the round.    Sam was in his 60s by then, but my god what a swing, and what a pure ball striker.  He cruised around in a no effort 67, and I think he went out and played another 18 late in the afternoon.....

In his heyday, David Duval.

I still wish I could swing like that guy.

I would have to say Tiger has to a certain extent with his snapping the left leg/squat move for power in the golf swing.  I also started to putt like him with the arc/closing the gate stroke which was suggested by my college coach.

Hogan, when I was younger and learning the game.

Seve, after watching him practice and play in person, and finally getting to play in a Pro-Am with him.

Oosthuizen, when he came out on tour I finally saw what tempo and rhythm were really about.

I've always loved the tempo of Fred Couples and Ernie Els swings and I've tried to mimic that in my swing.  More recently I love Nelly Korda's swing and could literally watch it on repeat all day.

Same here, when I felt things getting too quick I'd just try and swing like Ernie.

In my mind - Freddie Couples. When I play my best, it's always that free, easy motion I feel. And I just envy his swing and have for 30 some years.

But when I see my swing on video, it's more like Phil. And I've seriously never tried to go after his steez at all. I think it's more a measure of coming up in golf in the time I did and having stupid long monkey arms and legs; so I just have that lanky movement.

I got to follow Freddy at bay hill in 2004 or 5. Watched him hit 6i on 11 from a very close face on view. That shot always reminds me that impact is where speed is. Every swing was the same for him, smooth all the way through. But he jumped on that 6i and the only thing that changed was how hard he hit the ball.

Same.

I remember my first real lesson.  I got some golftec lessons as a gift about a decade ago.  The instructor asked me who my favorite golfer was to find out what kind of swing I was trying to emulate.  I didn't watch golf at the time, so I struggled to even name a golfer that wasn't Tiger.  Even now that I watch golf regularly, my athletic ability and swing are so far removed from the pros that it would be absurd to even try to emulate a pro swing.  So to honestly answer the question probably one of the youtube guys.  I used to watch a lot of Clay Ballard.  Gankas.  Chris Ryan.  But like most I've had very little success from watching videos online.  Or maybe the ladies.  Whenever I'm curious about trackman stats, I look at LPGA data as their clubs, carry, ballspeed resemble mine much more closely than PGA numbers.

  • 2 weeks later...

my swing is my own...thanks to Mr. Jiminez (hope I got his name correct), he was the club pro at the Manhattan (KS) Country Club in the late 50's to early 60's. He stressed the basics: stance, grip & swing. He let me find my own "groove", and then was practice, practice, practice.....etc. I was pre-teen in those days, before the Arnold Palmer style of put every ounce of Energy/muscle fiber into every swing. It was more along the lines of Earnest Jones "Let the Clubhead do the work"...different times.
As to influences - Hogan, Bobby Jones, and to an extent Snead...not to emulate their swing (even at that age, I realized that if I copied Hogan's swing, it was no longer Hogan's swing - it was my swing, that of a pre-teen not a pro....if there was anything that influenced me was Hogan's practice....
anyway....this post/topic made me think back, so thanks for the memories
