Do you use a 2 or 3 iron?

It's mostly about club speed and what you can do with the club.

I swing driver about 108 and there's no way an iron with less than 22o of loft would have any benefit to my game.

As a counter point, using only 11 clubs and maintaining good yardage gaps, I cover from as far as I can reliably hit a ball from the ground (16.5 deg fairway) through a SW and LW separated by only 2 degs of loft but two distinctly different sole configurations.  Add Driver and Putter and I still have room for another club.  On occasion I carry a  21 degree 3 iron for use primarily as a trouble club or 'wind cheater'.

Hell, I hit 1-irons for fun. Not really an on-course club unless I'm playing irons only. Something that you have to be really on your best to make work.

I occasionally take a 2-iron out, especially in vintage sets that I play 3 wedges with. 3-iron is always in the bag if the set I'm playing has one.

Unfortunately it actually seems that 3-irons just aren't available from many manufacturers. I recently looked at buying DTC iron heads for a new build and had to cross off a lot of good clubs for lack of a 3i.

I have a 3 iron then 5-PW.  I don't see the benefit of having a 2 iron because the distance gap between the 3 iron and 2 hybrid isn't that large.  I have room for one more club in my bag.  Not sure whether to put in a gap wedge or something else.  With the absence of a gap wedge, it's forced me to get creative and play a lot of half and 3/4 swings with all my wedges which has been extremely beneficial.

I was looking at some data and for 2021 it looks like only 28% of the top 100 players continue to use a 3 iron. It made me wonder... ego aside, why would anyone who is not a professional still choose to do so?

The below chart is from this study.

image.png.0718a5f040da8220b99ea36e9bdb38c8.png

I do carry both a 3 iron and a 2 iron.  The 3 iron is 21* loft, the 2 iron is 17*, and is an MP-20 HMB.  Not far off from being a utility iron, really.

When I play Golden Ram sets, I sometimes carry the 1 iron, just for fun.  However, its loft is 16*, not much different than the 2 iron above.

Frankly, the reason I put the 2 iron in the bag in place of the 2 hybrid I had in that slot previously is that I hit the 2i a bit better than the 2h.  I'm far from a Tour Pro, as my golf game is replete with LOFT, but long irons have never been much of a problem for me.

Something most folks don't consider when making these sorts of comparisons....   the Tour Pros are facing considerably different course conditions than we are, much less friendly.  Because of this, and the relative skill level of their fellow competitors, their margin for error is significantly smaller than it might be for me, you, or most anyone who posts on WRX.

Some actual data for comparison, my course is rated 71.4/127 from the Blue Tees, and is only 6500 yards, par 71.  Contrast that with the relatively absurd ratings one would get from a course set up at a Tour event, where slope would be 150 if not off the scale, and course rating in the mid to upper 70s.

They play a different game

I switch between a 2 iron and 5 wood depending on how my swing is feeling and how I am delivering the club at the moment.

Currently gaming the 2 iron as the fairways have dried out a bit in SoCal and a few swing changes I've worked on have given the 2 iron a more consistent shot shape for me.

I bet if you got the correct shaft, you could find one that works. My SS is the same as yours and low lofted irons work well for me.

I have a 3i lofted down to 20* which I use as a fairway finder off the tee mostly. It compliments my 5W at about the same distance but it launches lower and runs out a bit more so it’s a great wind club for me.

I use a 21 degree 3 iron (so a modern lofted 4 iron), other than on wet days where I may use the 22 degree hybrid.  At my course, I have a few tight holes where an accurate, 200-220 yard tee shot is useful, and I'm more confident about my accuracy with my 3 iron vs. my 22 degree hybrid.  I'd be more confident hitting the hybrid off of the turf, but at my short course with only one par 5, I'm basically never faced with a 200 yard shot from the fairway.  If more of my golf was played on a long and open course, I'd probably be carrying the hybrid instead.

I don't use one because I don't swing fast enough (118-119 with Driver) to get the needed height out of one. I like to see a stock 110-115 foot apex through the bag and can't get that at my speed with a 2 iron. I only put it in when the winds are going 50-60 km+.

I sometimes carry a 2 iron, most often when playing as a single in the early morning. Carrying a ball retriever when walking/carrying makes me look a little too much like a Google technician, and the extra length makes retrieval around pond edges just that little bit easier.

My bag goes 3 wood, 3 iron. Set PW is 46* then Titleist wedges 50, 54, 58.

I don't like how high hybrids go and even a really strong one was overlapping my 4 iron.  Also find that woods and hybrids are not as versatile as the long irons for me.

It does vary from player to player but I think the opposite is really true for the greater majority of golfers.

I carry a 19* 2-iron, as well as a 23* 3-iron.

Why I carry them:

  • Hybrids too volatile for me personally.
  • Wood for that distance (235-240) goes way too high, and can't be flighted down (e.g. for wind)... said differently: I'm not great at de-lofting woods.
  • 118-120 swing speed means I can get ball off the ground.
  • 2-iron is much more versatile to me.  I can take it high/low, left/right.
  • Blade-iron has less distance variance for me.  Hollow-body irons, let alone fairway woods/hybrids, just have that fear of the hotter face.
  • I'm steeper than most, and get along better with irons than non-irons.  I have much more confidence looking down at a 2-iron than a hybrid equivalent.

Why (most) pros don't carry it:

  • They trust hybrid/wood as a scoring club on par 5s, and need the (more reliably) higher trajectory/steeper descent angle to hold greens
  • Off-the-tee, they don't need another club that runs for miles (unless playing links golf, where the 2-irons come out more frequently on tour).  They want a club with plenty of spin that holds at a specific carry yardage for their 3rd club.  Into the wind, most guys just take advantage of low-spin/launch conditions of their Driver...
  • Most modern swings have pretty severe delofting (sometimes up to 10-15*), which means delofting a 2-iron to the same degree would basically be stinger city (i.e. 3* dynamic loft).  Take a look at Brooks Koepka's trackman numbers -- 30* 6-iron being de-lofted 14* to 16*.  If you extrapolate, he's taking his 23* 4-iron down to maybe even like 9*.  So on top of lofts that are even stronger than before, there is an even greater de-lofting phenomenon (i.e. the obsession with left wrist bowing, etc...) that basically shifts the dynamic lofts of these clubs even further to 1i/2i territory of old.

About 3 years ago, at age 55, I dropped my blade 3 iron and went to hybrids. Just couldn't hit it consistently from the fairway.
Never really liked hybrids, so went looking for a driving iron to try.
Stumbled onto a Honma TW-X 3 iron, and it's been fantastic. It's incredibly straight, and very high launching from the tee. From the fairway, with my thin miss, it can be a little low, but it's very good for laying up on Par 5's.

Exactly the case for me. I can hit a 5 wood 140 feet high or 40 feet high really easily. I can't do one of those with a 2 iron (guess which 😂).

Add On: the 5w or hybrid chip is the easiest shot in the bag around the greens. Yes, you can use a 3 wood as well, but the extra loft=slightly softer touch.

I have an 18* utility iron (DI) that is less consistent than my 3h.  Out of 10 shots I may hit the 2i farther once, but only marginally, so it is at home in my spare bag.  My 4i is 21* and I do game that.  My 3h is 20* and it gaps well with my 4i.  It is so much easier to elevate a hybrid or a wood, I'm actually considering replacing my 4i with a 23* 4 hybrid.

20.5* 4 iron goes in and out of the bag depending on time of year and how my swing is working.  Almost always used for tee shots where accuracy is needed.  It's also superb from an elevated tee box with trouble in play.

As long as I'm not bundled up for cold temps it works great and I find it a better tee club than the corresponding 20.5* hybrid that replaces it during cold weather.

In all honesty I could just use the 23* 5 iron and it wouldn't change my scores, perhaps it's time to ditch the 20.5* iron?  I'll have to have a range session focused on those two clubs.  I'm pretty sure how it will turn out.

Interesting topic.
