Anyone carry a 5 wood as their longest club other than driver?

I’ve gone back and forth between a 4 and 5 wood as my only fairway and I’m back to a 5 wood and will likely stick with it for a while.

Modern day 5-woods are 17-17.* and so easy to hit. IMO they replaced the old 4 woods and is more than enough fairway woods for 90% of amateur golfers.  Most people struggle to hit a 3-wood off the deck. And it's really not worth carrying for an extra 10-15 yards off the tee.

I currently have a 5 wood turned strong 1.5* so it's more like a HL 3 wood with a closed face. I was going to buy a 3 wood but they are currently out of stock.

I carry a 5wd, but also a 3wd. I see a good 10 to 20 yards difference.

I could see using various combos between using driver, 3wd, 5wd or driving iron based on the courses I play.

For instance, I play in a league on Tuesday’s where everyone plays from the whites (older crowd mostly), I never hit my 3wd from those Tees.

No 3w here, driver is the best club in my bag so I don’t need a 3w for tighter fairways and if I’m further out than 225 or so then I don’t need to be going for it anyways IMO.

Ooh. That’s that course management stuff. I keep hearing about that… 😝

  • 4 weeks later...

Just ordered a stealth 5 wood to ditch the 3. On the monitors I hit that 5 wood about 10-15 yds further than my old 3 wood. Lower spin, it just goes, didn’t see the need for a 3 wood anymore.

I play a Mizuno St-Z 5 wood lofted down to 16.5. Easy to hit off deck and the tee. I might give up a bit of yardage on good hits but on average hits it flies 245ish with good trajectory. I'm long for a club player but I do not qualify for my big hitter card.

I got rid of the 3 wood (and 3 hybrid) last year and went to 5 wood and 7 wood. Actually have been gaming the 7 wood a lot and not using the 5 wood much.

It depends upon your definition. I carry a 16* fairway wood which I consider a weak 3-wood. Occasionally, I will put my 14* fairway wood into the bag in place of the 16*. I consider my 14* a strong 3-wood. The 14* is 1/2 inch longer than the 16* and produces noticeably longer shots (5 to 8 yards) but it’s not as versatile as the 16*. The 16* is more effective out of the first cut of rough.

My definition of a 3-wood is 15* of loft and choose your length. Shorten the shaft 1/2 inch with 18* of loft and we have a 4-wood. Shorten the shaft another 1/2 inch with 21* of loft  and you have a 5-wood. Manufacturers will tell you differently, but they’re selling distance to the public. There’s a sucker born every minute.

Exactly OP. I alternate between a SIM Ti 5 wood 19* (turned to the lowest setting I think is 17*) and a PXG 16* 3 driving iron depending on course and conditions.  Here in AZ the driving iron serves me better for scoring and control but back east on the wooded parkland style courses the 5 wood seems to work better for more carry less run. Good luck on what you decide.

I've not carried a 3w for 25yrs. I've owned a couple but they've never lasted more than 1-2 rounds in the bag.

Driver (10.5*), Ping 5wood (17.5*) with 3wood shaft, 9wood (23*)

5wood is only a couple yards shorter than the 3 and more versatile.

Love the 9wood but still carry the 4 iron for punch outs and par three’s.

I dropped my 3w earlier in the season. The 5W is the longest club I can confidently hit off the deck along with off the tee. Carry distance is similar so I won't be going back.

Not 5 wood exactly - 18 degree utility iron.

Only carry 4 wood in scrambles and other team events that would warrant more aggressive play on par 5s.

Beyond that, I’m all utility iron off the deck. 21 degree I play about 200 or so, and 18 degree UP TO about 225 or so. Depending on situation, I might hit 18 degree from further than 225. But generally once I’m out 250, I’m laying up to 75-100 yards. Depends though on what is around the green - carry hazards, lost ball potential, OB, etc.

Off the tee I’m all driver or 18 degree utility iron. Hit the utility 225-250 off tee. If crappy shot, 200-225.

Fairway wood isn’t really much more accurate than driver for me - so don’t need for that purpose.
