MMT or Modus in Wedges?

Option would be to go MMT 105 stiff and use 8 iron shafts. Might flow better into the wedges and give you the slighter softer feel the modus R does

Hey everyone!

Recently got switched into the MMT 95S iron shaft and I LOVED them. Currently playing the Modus 105R in my wedges, do I keep them or go MMT 95S throughout?

Nowhere near me has the ability to test that shaft in my wedges, so going in blind.

Is there any problems with your current wedges you're trying to "fix"?

You know the saying.   If it's not broke....

Some like to use the same shaft but there are also many like a bit heavier shaft in the wedges.

After dropping shaft weight in the iron set to 95 gm, I continued to play my wedges with stock DG's (127 gm) for more than 10 years.  And when I did come down, I went to 110 gm shafts instead of 95 gm.   That change was more out of curiosity than need.   And I can't say I noticed much difference after the switch.    Now, several years later with more arthritis and one shoulder surgery done, I don't' think I'd be doing well with the heavy DG's any more but still don't see any need to drop down from the 110 gm shafts.

But that's me.  Everyone can be a bit different.

What would the 8 iron shaft do different than the regular wedge? Sorry - probably a basic question

It's one a way to tweak the stiffness (and weight) of the wedge shaft a bit.  Usually only done when one is using the same shaft in the wedges as they are in the rest of the set - and even then only done by a small percentage of players who are very sensitive to the stiffness in the wedges.   Most am's are typically not that sensitive to get any advantage from this "trick."   Shaft weight in the wedges can be important for all, but generally not stiffness due to the shorter playing length and slower swing speed.

And you've already using a very different shaft in the wedges - both in weight and stiffness (softer) by going to the R flex Nippon.   So it's not really all that relevant a suggestion to you unless you think your wedge shafts are currently too soft.  And even then it would better to just go up a full flex in the nippons if you are happy with that weight.

You can read more about it in this thread.

Definitely part of the switch is curiosity, but I would also say I’m not very happy with my wedge set up.

The main reason for the move to MMT was because it got my ball flight down. The Modus tends to send the balls into orbit.

In that case, sorry I thought you liked that soft feel. It can’t hurt to try an MMT 95 or 105 s wedge shaft in one of your wedges. Do you like the weight of your current wedges overall? If yes, try the 105

Well that’s where it gets tricky…my current wedges don’t feel soft. I’m coming from NSPRO 850R, so unless I’m swinging an cooked spaghetti noodle, nothing feels soft.

Weight of 105 is fine, but I would love to get an extra 5-10 yards out of each wedge.

If it doesn't feel soft and you're launching it high relative to the irons w/ the MMT's - first guess is that it's probably not the shaft weight or the stiffness.   That's not definite by any means, but I'd try something else first.   Have you had the swing weights checked?   Might want try playing with some lead tape on the heads.  That might slow down the release a little bit.  And if it doesn't, it's easy to remove.  Another test is to try it choked up 1/2" and see if that makes any difference.   It's more common for a heavier swing weight to slow down the release but it's also possible it could be promoting an early release (little flip) due to an overcompensation for the heavier swing weight.

Another thing to consider is that the butt size of the MMT is a little bit bigger than the Nippons.  So if you're using the same grip on the irons and wedges, you're actually getting a slightly bigger grip size in the irons.   You might think about an extra wrap of tape on the wedges to get them even to the irons.

If those don't do anything to help, then there could still be something about the shaft.  Anything is possible.

My concern with that is just how heavy it is. 113 grams is a lot for me. Have arthritis in my lead hand

I see your concern.  Since you like the MMT 95S in your irons, I would suggest going with those in your wedges then.
