I haven't played Deere Run for quite a while. I need to get back down there. It's a fun golf course.

I will be there all day on Thursday & Friday, and may be back on Sunday, as this event takes place in my local area.  I know that a top-10 finish in any Tour event automatically qualifies you for a spot in the following week's field, so does this mean that Michael Thorbjornsen is in this week?  Would be cool to check out his game, if that's the case.

Along with the earlier notables mentioned, Adam Hadwin was a last-minute entry, Cam Davis has been quite solid this year, and J.T. Poston is coming off a great week.

"With many of the great and good now preparing to get themselves ready for a two week Scottish holiday beginning next week, we don’t have the most stellar field"

Scottish Open? That's next week and has the same purse as the JDC. I'd rather play the JDC with a greater chance of winning and then head over to the Open a week in advance for preparation instead of playing some Scottish Open.

Thorbjornsen is not listed in the field as of this morning so maybe that perk doesn't pertain to amateurs maybe?

edit: I was a split second too late based on the above response. Maybe he did get in this week but declined due to Palmer Cup

Top 10 only to pros

Hes on his way to Europe for the Palmer Cup

Edit

actually amateurs who top 10 do get into the event. There was an AM last week who almost won the event in Maine and is playing the next one in Colorado this week

Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Pat Cantlay, Sam Burns, Matt Fitzpatrick, Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, Billy Horschel and Xander Schauffele would seem to take a different view than you 🙂

yea, the big names never play the JDC but it was always a week prior to the OPEN and they would want to head to the Open a week in advance for preparation. Different this year.

Great chance for them this year to take their time in getting over there this week, get up and running at the Scottish, get over jet lag, etc, etc and then head to St Andrews for the big one. Can see why there are so few big names this week.

Most the big names like to head to the Open a week earlier and get over jet lag etc. and prep on the actual Open venue. Only a few of the big names would play the Scottish open, past few years it's always been the week prior to Open but only Rory and a few others only played it. You don't have as much prep time on the course or rest before the Open if you are playing a tournament the week prior. For example you wouldn't see Tiger doing something like that pre injuries.

The Scottish Open (with the exception of 2020) has been the week before The Open for years and in it's current guise of playing at links courses since 2011. Since then, the field for it seems to have gradually gotten strong and stronger and it worked pretty well for Mickelson, Stenson, Clarke who parlayed top 10 finishes or wins into success the following week at Murifield, Royal Troon or Royal St Georges. In the past 3 years or so, play has been scheduled to take place later in the day to allow it to be shown at a better time for the American audience - that's not happening if we just have Rory and a few others playing in it.

Same can be said for the JDC, its been the week prior to the Open for years with the exception of this year it is two weeks in advance which is better. Zach Johnson always plays the JDC and placed 3rd in 2015, he went on to win the British Open the following week, Jordan speith won the JDC that year and was one shot off a playoff at the British open that same year. I could keep going with top 10 finishes at the Open for players who played in the JDC the week prior, if anything it has a better track record for finishes in the British Open the following week.

If you think that you have a chance to win the Open Championship, it is a wise move to go over and play the Scottish to get used to the weather and the turf.

Worked pretty well for Phil Mickelson.

I think it’s more wise to go over the week prior to British Open and play the actual course to get use to the weather and turf and rest. Play your tournaments before the week right before a major.

Thanks again to @MattyO1984 for his also stellar preamble.
Just because there’s no big names doesn’t mean that the JDC isn’t a great tournament. As long as it’s close it’ll be a good one. Players looking for their first win.
It’s always great for first timers to come thru in the clutch. I always celebrate first wins. They mean the world to future players.
