Is this a qualifier for The Open and you need to finish top 4?   Or, is that a relic of something from years ago?

There are 3 spots available for those not yet qualified. You must finish in the top 10 to be eligible. That's the way it was done at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this season.

I think it’s more wise to go over the week prior to British Open and play the actual course to get use to the weather and turf and rest. Play your tournaments before the week right before a major.

When you qualify for the Open Championship you will be able to put your strategy to the test. Let us know how it works out.

My strategy? Uh that’s what most the top players do. Very few top platers played the JDC or Scottish open the week prior

Actually 14 of the world’s top 15 are playing the Scottish Open. Players outside the top 15 who are playing include Spieth,Willie Z, Hideki, and Billy Ho. I guess they have a different strategy than yours.

you obviously haven’t followed it in years past. It’s certainly not like that every year. This year yes because St. Andrews is very very close to the venue the Scottish open is played on so why not.

Hmm, let’s see. In 2021 players at the Scottish included John Rahm, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffle, Scottie Scheffler, Sam Burns, Tommy Fleetwood, Rory McIlroy, and Colin Morikawa. Seemed to work out well for Colin.

Rory McIlroy and Matthew Fitzpatrick played in it as well.

Realized I had omitted Rory and edited my post. No disrespect to Matthew. I left him off because some would say he was not yet a top player at the time of the 2021 Scottish.

Fair point but he was still ranked around 20th or last year at The Scottish and had 7 DP tour wins to his credit. Better resume and ranked higher than Tommy Fleetwood at the time.

True. I would have considered him a top player also. Didn’t want to leave room to be accused of stretching my definition of top player. I included Fleetwood, in part, because of fan popularity.

yea, there are some I’ve said that much. So Rahm, Thomas, Xander, Rory and Colin. What about all the other top players? Oh right they were doing exactly what I said.

Two can play this game, lets look at 2019 when Tiger was around. All these players did exactly what I said, went to the Open a week early and didn't play the Scottish Open, Still think its only my strategy, lol.

Tiger, Finau, Koepka, Ooosthiuzen, Rose, Speith, Cantlay, Schauffele, DJ, Day, Woodland, DeChambeau, Horschel, Watson, Scott, Cameron Smith

I think I am coming into this from the same side of things as Dale. I disagree with you (and suspect Dale will as well) when you stated "very few top players" played the Scottish Open or for that matter the JDC. I guess it depends on your definition of what constitutes "very few". I accept that the likes of Tiger et al, as listed by you have not played but equally, even before this year guys like JT, McIlroy, Rose, Rahm, Stenson, Els, Mickelson, Fitzpatrick have all played and made a habit of playing - this year, even more of them are teeing it up so whilst it might not be your, Tiger or DJ's strategy, based on the quality of field that the tournament has and has it seems pretty unfair to say that "very few top players" have played.

Mcilroy and Rahm have generally always played it. It's different this year, it's like in the backyard of St. Andrews so why not. I'm just stating fact. I have gone to the JDC for years and looked up what players were doing, most would head to the Open a week early.

We can agree to disagree as I say, it depends on your take of what "very few" is.

Just FYI though, in the last few years when they had both been the week before the Open

Scottish Open OWGR Strength of Field vs John Deere Classic

2021 - 424 vs 122

2019 - 309 vs 76

2018 - 277 vs 98

2017 - 291 vs 130

Seems like the Scottish Open has plenty of top players teeing it up 🙂

I'm not comparing the JDC to Scottish Open at all, Scottish will get a few more for sure being overseas. I get where you are coming from being from Scotland as well.

I stand by what I say though, it's just the way it is being a tournament the week prior to a major. That is why the tour puts these less popular tournaments in these spots.

This is what Rory said about the Scottish Open in Dec. 2021. I think he always played it as well being from Ireland to get more appearances over seas. Looks like he has decided to play it this year though.

"Rory McIlroy: I probably won't play in Scottish Open in 2022"

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/golf/mcilroy-i-probably-wont-play-in-scottish-open-in-2022-3491459

“I probably won’t,” he replied to being asked by Scotland on Sunday if he’d be teeing up again in the Scottish Open in 2022.

“The last two times I’ve played The Renaissance I just haven’t played well and, though it’s a good week in terms of you stay on site and I’ve enjoyed it, I just haven’t got what I have been looking for in a way.

“It gives you competitive rounds before The Open, but I went into this one especially with more questions than answers after it (the Scottish Open).”

McIlroy, who finished 15 shots behind winner Collin Morikawa at Royal St George’s in a tie for 46th, believes he can get himself better prepared for the 150th Open at St Andrews by doing something different.

I’ll probably not play the Scottish Open and maybe spend a bit of time at St Andrews beforehand,” he added.

I'd love to see this tournament get a stronger field one day.  It's a great course and has one of the coolest sponsor branding on tour!

I’ll say one thing for you. You stick to your guns despite contrary evidence. It’s been fun. Have a nice life.

The scottish open seems to be a little more popular the past couple of years.   But look at the 2018 US players.   Not very many.  Fowler, Reed, Phil  , Kuchar, are the recognizable names.

https://www.google.com/search?q=scottish+open+2018+golf+leaderboard&rlz=1C1UEAD_enUS981US981&oq=2018+scottish+open+golf&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i22i30.8292j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

in 2016 scottish open, 3 americans made the cut, and 4 missed.  that was it, 7 americans total.   Meanwhile in the (british) Open, 33 americans made the cut, and 18 or 19 missed the cut, so in 2016 7 americans played the scottish open while a total of 51 or 52 played the open.
