Time for new irons...Goodbye G400's...where do I go?

My G400 Irons have taken me from a 16 to a 7 in the last 3 years.  But my swing has totally changed from when I had them fit to me and I'm told I need new shafts so I'm thinking I might as well upgrade the whole set.

I love the forgiveness of the G400 but they do feel a little big/clunky to me.  I play a slight draw and my miss is a hook, hence the new shaft to help the hook.... Anyways, I'm looking for something that looks "sleeker" but can give me the same pop and accuracy of the G400.

What should I be looking at?

If you can hit the center of the face consistently, you can play anything you want.  If you hit a fair number of toe shots, a shot the G400's forgive, then be careful with your next selection if you decide to go smaller.

G410s are supposed to be a bit smaller than G400s, and have a higher MOI (more forgiving).  Perhaps worth a look?

There’s no reason not to try the g425 or 525 irons. The 425 is sleeker than the 400 and it is a really great iron. To me the shape has improved.

One you may not think of but is a bit more player-esque but not intimidating and with some tech is the Cobra MIM Tours. Lots of good players like them.

Another possibility could be the Mizuno 921 Hor Metal Pro. Looks good, a game improver but well proportioned. Very forgiving.

I lovet the idea of sticking with ping and especially the "G Line".  Is there a point, maybe handicap-wise, when it's best to move on from game improvement irons?  Will it "stunt" my growth/improvement?

There are some epic threads here discussing Ping G irons in the hands of scratch type players.

One set worth looking at, assuming you are not a big digger, is the Mizuno Hot metal irons.  Not the pro version, the full size version.  They are smaller than the G400's, less offset, and sound and feel quite a bit better.

I don’t think it’s mentioned in this thread but ZX5 irons offer a bit better feel and less offset in a forgiving iron. I was messing around with some G425 irons at the range the other day. I could play those easily also. I don’t know if I’d gain much over my ZX5’s though. Maybe a slightly more forgiving iron.

I really like the Cleveland Launcher CBX. Very Ping G like without the fat soles and a more attractive topline. They have the Srixon V sole which works very well on the courses I play. Very forgiving and straight. Easy to hit longer iron (5 & 6). I haven't personally played the newer version, but there are rave reviews on other sites from those that have. The Cleveland UHX are worth a look too if you can find them.

Just picked up a set of Maltby KE4 Max heads from Golfworks and have to say they are the best looking GI irons I've ever seen. You can get a set assembled by them with your shaft of choice for very reasonable price. I haven't hit mine yet, but again the reviews from those that have are excellent (see the Maltby TS2 thread in the club building forum).

+1. Those Maltby KE4 MAX iron heads are no joke. Look great, perform great and has an adjustable weight in the head. The ball speed preservation across the face is impressive.

Whatever you do, don’t take any less performance/consistency from a newer set, expecting to “groove” them more as time goes on, or expecting a break-in period. Make sure your newly fitted set is actually better or equivalent, don’t be made to believe your game will progress into the new clubs.  One should fit for the game they have right here and now, not an uncertain future situation that may never materialize.

I played the best golf of my life with the G400's but that didn't stop me from selling them and moving on to something more player like. If hitting a little fat or towards the toe isn't a issue the Wilson D9 forged are a wonderful iron. It almost sounds like the I525 or I210's might also be up your alley. Personally, I'm done dinking around thinking I need a forged players iron to lower my handicap. Just went back to a nice set of G400's and couldn't be happier. Good luck in your search.
