yep……I own his irons from his major win at the  pga win as well from the Ryder cup.  I own about 100 of his woods, putters and a staff bag plus his personalized head covers as well. The irons are super cool.  Also many putters in various states of customization.  His gamers were layered with lead tape.

Outstanding.  What a fantastic lot of golf history.  Kudos for keeping it all together.

The irons certainly have an amazing amount of customization.  He really made them into what he needed with all that weighting work and sole sculpting.  Really interesting post.  Thanks!

Incredible!   Would love to hear how you ended up with those.   Those are 1953 models correct?  These look like the exact clubs you posted.  Except they look a little more dinged up in the picture with Jerry.

Drilled ports to add lead weights, THEN slapped on more lead tape🤣

Have you checked the swingweights? Are they at something like E8?

I’ve been looking to find more info on this set but haven’t had any luck yet.  Thought i posted about this set before here but it may have been on face book.  So 2 years ago during Covid lockdown I bought some persimmons on eBay.  He wasn’t too far away in SoCal so I asked about doing a local pick up vs shipping. When I arrived he said he had more clubs to check out.  Turned out he bought a locker under Jerry’s name (pga tour pros were not like todays guys - many actually worked at courses to make ends meet outside of playing in events).  Jerry was head pro at wilshire cc.   Turned out he had over 4,000 clubs, plus bags and other golf stuff.  Clubs were stacked up everywhere.    The seller wasn’t a golfer but found Jerry’s name on the locker paperwork so he did his own research.   I made multiple visits to buy clubs and ended up buying about 100 clubs. I’ve been in contact with Jerry’s grandson who is a teaching pro also family local to me.  Haven’t met yet though.  The gamer iron set is missing the 6 iron. I scoured the various other clubs but never found it :(.   I did buy many prototype shankless clubs also.  Picked up various persimmon Spalding woods which I’d assume he used in conjunction with the irons.  Also have some pre cleveland branded persimmons as well as about a dozen ping putters and wedges.

I do have a Jerry Barber signature Spalding SW over in the building. Not one of his personal clubs but a retail model. It is similar to a 53 Spalding Dynamiter SW but with less offset. I used to play it with my 3800 Mac Tommy Armours some--- Another one of my many sets I need to get back out and play. I figured in my retirement I would have plenty of time to play many of my various sets. The mind is willing but the body is not at this time

Could we please see some of his prototype shank-proof examples? I would be interested in observing the similarities in design concepts with his later "Golden Touch" no shank clubs. Thanks a bunch for your posts and pics. Very interesting.

I’ll find some time to take some pics.   I have a set of his laminate woods too which are a pretty interesting design

Thank you so much for posting those. REALLY interesting. I am sure I am not the first one to see one or two of the pictures of the no-shank iron prototypes and think "forerunner to the Cleveland VAS".

And the laminate Golden Touch? Hybrid proto?

Relatively recently, my wife and I were looking at pics of various relatives.  Invariably, they all look older than my wife and I, in spite of being a decade or more younger in the pics than we are now (I'm 58).

To be fair, my father had a harder life than I have.  I didn't spend two years in a POW camp in China, for example...

Same here. I've a picture of an ancestor (Dad's great grandfather? Great great grandfather?) which was taken in his Forties, and he looks like someone in his late Fifties or early Sixties now, though the heavy coat and beard are part of the reason.

I'm a recent student of clubs Spalding, so this is great stuff, thank you!

I'm curious about the faces of those irons:  are they sand-blasted, or coated maybe? I've not see that on photos of other 1953 Top-Flite irons.

Another Jerry Barber customization, perhaps?

And they also look a lot like those F2 face forward wedges as they were called. Supposed to be shank proof. Won a $20 bet off one of the guys at my club. Bet him I could shank it and I did it. Back in those days my timing was dead on plus I have a tendency for some reason to shank a offset hosel like that anyhow

I too am a recent student of Spalding.  Maybe more of an obsession would be the correct term.

I too have not seen photos of 1953 era Spaldings with similar faces.  My first through was "those have had to have been rechromed at somepoint"

The woods were retail products.  Not hybrid like just  small like old school woods were before 460cc giants.  I have a set of 3 of these woods .

I don’t think the faces were customized but I am unsure..  The longer irons are mint.    Also per someone else’s comment  - I see no way how these could have been rechromed.     The irons are 1950 something, original and tweaked with lead weight by Jerry to suit his game.…….I’ve never seen this exact model anywhere else though or the year made but maybe there are some Spalding experts that can chime in.

The faces are most likely customized.  Spalding wasn’t putting faces like those on those clubs in the 50s.  Those ferrules are on the ‘53 models.  Google search that and you won’t find anything like those faces.

These may not be the same

clubs but they look awfully close.   Zoom in on the faces.  They look different.   Also, saying the long irons look mint would be a pro for a rechrome in my opinion. I’m going to guess Jerry used those clubs some.

Being stainless steel I doubt that they were chrome plated.  There is little or no difference in the look of the worn/modified soles as compared the the rest of the club, which would be noticeable if they were plated.  There does appear to be some kind of coating on the faces but I have no idea what it could be.  It may just be what a frosted face looks like on that grade of stainless.  Whatever it is it certainly is durable as there is little wear to it even on the most used clubs in the set.  Even the ceramic coating used on MacGregor irons is often noticeabley worn on everyday Joe's clubs let alone those of a tour pro.  Lots of interesting mysteries in these irons!
