changing shafts, easy?

Hi

I am interested in purchasing a (used) Ping driver (g425 max) and changing the shaft that comes with the driver.

 

If the replacement shaft I am planning on purchase has the specific Ping tip, is it just a matter of removing one shaft and installing the other one?  I am assuming that I will need the Ping tool in order to do that.

 

Anything else I would need to do?  I have never replaced a shaft.

2 very important steps:

 

1. Unscrew shaft in driver.

2. Screw in new shaft.

 

Using the ping tool helps to ensure you get the proper torque and don't snap off the screw.

If the "new" shaft you buy has the correct Ping adapter then yes, all you need to do is unscrew the current shaft and put the new on in there. Easy as that.

As others have alluded to, physically changing shafts that already have the right adapters on them is really very easy.

 

Now, one thing that may (or may not) be a consideration is that changing shafts could change the playing length and/or different shaft balance points.  Both of those could cause the swing weight (head weight) feel to change for better or worse.   Nothing you need to do about that right away but it's something you might want to be aware of once you start testing out the new shaft.

You really don't have to use the special Ping wrench if you have any brains at all.  Yes, the wrench prevents over tightening as it "clicks" loose at the correct torque.   The bolt isn't going to break when you tighten it unless you are a pro football player that weighs 300 pounds and leans on that bolt.  You can use any "star" driver of the correct size.  I've done it plenty of times without anything breaking or failures.  It's not rocket science.  It's a bolt.

You really overestimate the skill of an average human being.  Especially one asking how to unscrew a shaft.

You have your answer but as a pile on, the Titleist club wrench works perfectly in the Ping models as well and features the idiot resistant (nothing is 'idiot proof'...) torque let off.  Not suggestion one is better than the other - just expanding your options if you attempt to find one.

 

Most of my experience is with Titleist equipment but my wife recently got some new Ping woods/hybrids and I a new hybrid.  Loosening the screw in the Ping adapter is the exact same as the other million applications for which screws are used but I have found the Ping adapter often sticks in the hosel in a way I've never once experienced with Titleist (and thus far it has done it with every adapter every single time).  If that happens to you, once you are sure the screw is fully loose, LIGHTLY tap the heel of the club a few times against the ground, your hand, etc and the head will separate from the shaft.

If you tap the butt end of the club on the floor, it'll loosen the head.  No reason to hit the head on the floor.

Tough crowd this morning.

 

One note - make sure your replacement shaft has the correct G425 adapter tip. Ping changed the adapter in the G410 series onward so G425 has the newish adapter.
