Srixon Z Star XV

'Noles2013

Recommended Posts

So I usually just play a Callaway Supersoft but I won a dozen of these in a golf tournament recently and figured I’d try them out.  I bizarrely found out they were consistently flying 5-10 yards shorter on all my iron/full wedge shots.  Even the other times I’ve played a premium tour ball I don’t ever recall losing this much distance.

Anyone else ever have this issue with these or any other ball for that matter?

I lost a full club distance wise with the Z-Star, however, I decided to get in on the BOGO sale that Srixon had for Father's Day and got 3 boxes of the XV.  No distance lost and it's been a solid performer so far.  One thing I really like about it is that it's lower spinning off the irons.  It's very similar to the left dash which has been my gamer.

I smacked a ton of long drives with it this last year. Hit one around 310 with my mini driver, so distance wise it's up there with all the balls I play.

I have never experienced distanced loss with the XV's. If you're used to using a softer ball, losing 5-10 yards is not that surprising when switching to the XV which is a really high compression ball, if you dont compress it enough with your swing you would likely see distance loss that you wouldnt have in a softer ball which requires less compressing at contact.

I tend to like Srixon balls. My daughter gave me some of the yellow/white XV's for Father's Day and they seem to have the same distance as everything else I play.

I played the orange/yellow Q Stars last year for a while. That color combo was just a bit too goofy, even for me. The yellow/white almost looks like a pro ball. Almost.

Agreed with a post above that the XV is a high compression ball and you could lose distance or spin, especially on irons, if not compressing it enough - might come off as a knuckle ball.

It seems like you aren’t stuck to them as you had won some so no harm no fouls. But if you try some normal Srixon Z-Stars or the new Diamond you may be surprised at performance gain over Supersofts albeit at a premium.

The Diamond and the XV are 102 as listed by Srixon.  Standard Z-Star is listed as 90.

Cool. I pulled the numbers from a vendor's site which could well be inaccurate.

how do the diamond's compare to some of the other premium balls?

Im usually a ProV1 or BX guy..

Diamond is an odd ball.  It spins a little more off the irons and doesn't quite feel as firm as the XV.  It plays nothing like the Z-star and closer to the XV overall IMO.  If you wanna compare Titleist balls to the Diamond.  Think if left dash and ProV1 had a baby it would be the Diamond.

I have definitely found the z star XV and TP5X to carry a few yards less than the z star and TP5 for my wedges and irons. I think this has a lot to do with the higher compression. I felt as though the XV required more effort with irons to get the same output, but after much practice, it helped me gain speed actually and swing a bit faster through impact.

On the other hand, I tend to see a few more yards and less spin on driver and 3w shots from the tee with the XVs which is nice.

The one thing I don’t like about the XV vs the softer compression Z star is the spin on chips and low pitches. They seems to release a few more feet further with the same technique. I’m sure pros with wizard short games like Shane Lowry that play the XV have calibrated to it and generate more spin on short game shots, but it was a deal breaker for me. Something for everyone but best to work green to tee when choosing a ball.

I believe the distance issue may be related to low spin from the SS which is a common byproduct of ultra low compression balls. The few times I have tested super low compression balls, I began to overshoot targets with short irons and wedges. Never had this problem with balls that have an 80 + compression rating (or thereabouts). The XV on the other hand is actually designed to provide more spin with wedges which generally produces consistent and repeatable distance control.

The XV flies a little farther for me than prov1. Spin from irons and pitch’s though goes to the prov1 by a mile.

I just played an executive round. Distance was still good, if not a few yards farther than my prov1. As well, I was getting pull back on the greens from the tee. starting to enjoy this ball.

Can't say for sure.  I was given one left dot ball awhile back from one of the teaching pros I played with at my father's CC.  I hooked the damn thing into the woods after 2 holes, lol.

I haven't had any experience with lost distance on the Z Star XVs. However, I have seen that they tend not to be as durable as something like a ProV1x. The way the ball is composed, you can see where the two halves of the ball come together. Right there, when they make it, they polish it nice and good to get a good clean look. But from what I've seen, I've actually seen some stress line fractures right there across the middle of the golf ball that I haven't seen on other golf balls. Granted, this is after several rounds of being hit. It's not like it happens right away or in one round. But if you like to play a ball until you lose it, keep an eye out for those stress marks across the middle of the XVs.

I haven't tried it, but I have heard that the Srixon diamond ball is a good one. That's what their tour players play.

I haven't noticed that with the XV but will keep an eye out for that.  What I've noticed with the XV is that after about two rounds, it starts to become discolored.  You could say a yellowish huge starts to form on the cover.  I usually use a ball 2-3 rounds max if they make it that long and then toss them out.

I’ve noticed this as well.  I won a dozen TaylorMade TP5’s in addition to the Srixon’s and have found them to be much more durable.  I like them a lot better playing wise too.

The new versions are extremely durable, I can play them for 3+ rounds without issue. They tend to get marked on full wedges out of fairway bunkers, but in all honesty all balls do. Durability is very comparable to Titleist line (which are the gold standard).

Distance wise I feel the XV is bit longer than ProV1, not quite as long as the left dash but spins a touch more than the left dash. It is firmer than the regular V1x by a bit, but not as firm as the left dash.

If comparing to titleist balls

Softest to firmest: AVX --> Z-star --> ProV1 --> Diamond --> V1x --> XV --> left dash

Greenside spin, fairly similar though V1x, Z-star, ProV1 and diamond spin a bit more

iron spin, lowest to highest: AVX --> left dash --> XV -->prov1 --> Diamond -->Z-star --> V1x

Driver flight, lowest to highest: AVX--> ProV1 --> Z-star-->Diamond-->XV/-dash --> V1x

Hard to really say, but they are kind of comparable all good balls, all fill their niches.

You just lost a $40 ball!!!! I have two I got free from a Titleist fitting that I'm scared to use, lol. My partner and I both played the XV Diamond today in a two man scramble, and shot 7 under. A really all around great ball, the distance off the driver was big today, and hit a few well over 300, with a nice 320 yard drive on the last hole into a little breeze. While not as good in the wind as the Snell MTBX, it's a good wind performer too.

XV should be as long as anything and perform great.  (Do you think Matsuyama is going to play with an inferior golf ball?)

Biggest complaint some have with it is the clicky feel.   It is pretty firm compared to some balls and I admit is firmer than I'd like.  But it just works for me, and has since early 2019.

I took a chance on the Diamonds for the Fathers Day sale just for a change.   It's definitely much closer to the XV than to the regular Z Star IMO.  At first I was afraid I may have made a mistake and should have stuck with the XV, but after using it for a couple of rounds I think I prefer it.  It does still feel firm on fuller shots but it is a little less clicky chipping and putting.  Really enjoyed it and hit some good longer iron shots even into the wind, which I was concerned about with it being a higher-spinning iron shot ball.
