Workability and also forgiveness?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Been a blade/muscleback player for a while but would like a little more forgiveness but keep the ability to really work the ball both directions to help with predictability.

How do you find the workability of irons in more of the “players distance” class? Looking at the D9 Forged and bending them 1.5 degree weak. I am a little concerned with sole width on these, although I am fairly steep. The power slots also make me question the consistency of distance control.

Also looking at possibly ZX5’s or maybe ZX7’s (i know the 7’s arent really players distance). 7’s though im not sure would offer me that much more forgiveness.

One of the challenges of "working" players distance irons is the relatively lower levels of spin.  If you want a little more forgiveness while maintaining shot shaping capabilities I'd look at the Titleist T100 or something similar.

yeah i was thinking maybe t100 or zx7 or wilson CB to help with spin. Just not sure how much forgiveness im gaining over my mp58’s making that switch

Workability is a face/path issue. If a player can control face and path they can make any club curve and manipulate trajectory. The greatest players in the word are using ZX7, T100, Ping i210, Apex, P770, PXG P, Cobra MIM, and others. Find something you like the look of and fit you well.

The T100 would gain you help on the toe side of center, compared to most any Mizuno MP muscleback....and you wouldn't lose anything heel side.  The profile size and top-line would also likely fit your eye well

Consider Game-Improvement irons with smaller heads.

Caution: Avoid the Hot List Trap. Digest assigns clubs to the categories of Players, PD, GI and SGI according to perceived marketing niche.

And outside of Hot List some club reviews speak of a Player's Cavity category, or a Bette Player's category (this appears to blend  Player's and Player's Distance?)

These categories give one a starting point to test clubs, but odd results can occur.

Ping i200 started as players, but moved to the inaugural PD category; i210 was always Players. Theoretically "too much club" for me. But, with sub-100 gram AWT 2.0 R-flex shaft, I could hit either model fairly well. I could even hit a 4i off the deck fairly well.

From Callaway, the base Mavrik iron was supposed to be GI. But, it was difficult for me to launch (and evidently others without higher clubhead speed). The Mav MAX (see bag) has about 3 degrees higher loft per club than base Mav, but MAX irons fly about 15 yards longer - and higher. In another curious twist, the Mavrik family blended set mixed the Mav Pro at short end and MAX at long end. The base Mav iron did not gap well with either due to base Mav's stronger lofts. Base Mav probably should have been slotted as PD.

I mostly agree.  I find though that I can curve the ball a little more with certain irons compared to others when making the same swing.

+1. Rumor has it that you can't work SGIs. 'Taint so, McGee. I can work my SGIs just fine when I want to. What they're far less prone to is going left or right when I don't want them to.

Second this. Maybe not as forgiving as something with a bigger blade like ZX7 but by far the most forgiving iron I've hit in that small of head. Can work them like a blade. Perfect turf interaction with thin sole but I'm shallow.

You can probably get away with something a little bigger, Callaway Apex Pro or the TCB might be worth a look. (TCB a lot of the same specs as p750 and what Rahm was swinging before he went to Callaway).

I play the ZX5's and have no issue working the ball when I need too.  I have never played a blade though, and can't tell you how unforgiving blades can be.  My miss is a toe strike, and the ball doesn't do anything crazy, but typically lose about 5-10 yards on miss hits.
