Minimum Personal Launch Monitor Spec

Recommended Posts

I’m looking for a way to have solid, reliable practice at home so that I can practice every day and all through winter. I’m mid Handicap and working out some OTT issues. My predominant miss is start right stay right.

When I think of setting up something at home, my predominant concern is reinforcing bad habits (or developing new ones).

But I’m also a cheap bastxxx. So, what’s the minimum spec I need to get reliable practice? Do I need measured side spin (Mevo+) or is calculated (Garmin R10) enough? What else should I be considering in Launch Monitor specs so I set myself up for success?

Based on what you want to do and the problem, OTT and start right go right, path, spin and face to path are important.

Something to watch ball fight will also be important so you don’t just look at numbers, or you may get worse chasing numbers rather than ball flight.

Minimum for most would likely be good accurate ball flight information.  Which yes, means you need backspin and side spin. Calcuated vs measured depends on the accuracy of the calculations.  In fact indoors, all radar units calculate side spin.  Some are better at it than others.   Only the camera based LM's (e.g. skytrack) measure it directly.    Club head info - path and face-to-path is nice but not essential.  You should be able to get everything you need about that from video recordings of the swing - which you'll really need anyways for your goals.

LM data for swing improvement has a lot of limitations.  It's more a secondary tool then a primary one.   LM data tells you what happened at impact - but it doesn't tell you why it happened or how to fix it.   Video is the only thing that will do that - assuming you know what to look for.  If not that should be part of any lesson with a pro - how to monitor your own progress using video.   On top of that you can get good LM results with a bad swing and bad results with a good swing.  So  by itself it doesn't tell you nearly enough about your swing that you need to know.

Because of that, some might argue that an LM isn't even necessary to help you make swing changes.  Very nice - and helpful - but not essential.
