Calculated vs Actual vs No club face data

Recommended Posts

The Garmin R10 calculates club face data based on ball flight

The Mevo+ has no club face data

The Mevo+ Pro has measured club face data

Questions that I can’t find answered elsewhere:

1. Is hitting into a net worth a damn without club face data?

2. Is hitting into a net worth a damn with calculated club face data?

3. Am I just overthinking this and should just get the Garmin?

For reference, I’m fixing OTT and need reliable feedback

FWIW Mevo+ Pro club face data is calculated as well, same with Trackman. The difference between R10, Mevo+, and TM4 is that R10 only has launch angles and club movement to make predictions while Mevo+ has all that plus an actual measurement of spin magnitude and axis (outdoors at least) and then TM4 adds impact location on top of that.

Worth noting Mevo+ does measure the spin/axis indoors - it's just that the quality of that measurement varies with the user's environment, ball speed and flight distance. Actually quite good with 9' behind and 11'+ to screen/net but still not quite as consistent as outdoor, or a decent camera-based unit.

It measures spin, with dots on the ball, but not spin axis. Not even TM4 can actually measure spin axis indoors, there's just no mechanism to do it using radar without a very long ball flight being visible.

Yeah this is why I'm starting to lean toward SkyTrak

Just because it's not measured doesn't mean it will be way off though. For wedges to mid-irons I would expect spin axis values to be very good as gear effect is minimal on off-center strikes so if you have good measurements of VLA/HLA/AoA/Path and spin you should be able to back out spin axis quite accurately. It's primarily on driver and fairway metals where you might see noticeable differences with off-center strikes. TM4 improves this further by measuring strike location and attempting to correct for it.

Right, but the longer sticks is the only place where I need spin axis. I'm throwing darts with 6I to 56*. TM4 is great for when I'm ready to take on a second mortgage, till then...

I have a Mevo plus with PP.  Obviously correct spin axis with woods due to gear effect would be great but the “upside”  of not having it is the unit tells you what the ball flight would of been due to club path and face angle delivered. Assuming you are trying to hit it in the center of the face gear effect can actually mask issues with path or face angle. Impact stickers or foot spray for impact location plus M+ gives me plenty of info to work with - it’s just not ideal for indoor sim golf.

Sounds like you’re overthinking it. Nothing provides more reliable feedback than that smartphone in your pocket. Set it up down the line with slo-mo 240 fps to make sure you’re making the correct swing moves to set you up for success. Set some alignment sticks on the floor to ensure you have a frame of reference for direction, and record some swings. Set it up in front of you as well, and repeat the process. Works even better if you can use two phones/tablets at once to capture both angles. Forgive me if you’re already doing that, just covering all the bases. Practice swing feels a dozen times before you ever hit a ball. Better yet, a dozen times at a snail pace then slowly accelerate making the correct move (confirmed by camera of course) until it feels like you can make the new moves at full speed. Then you can add in a ball at half speed and slowly work your way up to full speed.

Any reason in particular for the launch monitor route rather than simply working at the range? $2000 buys a lot of range time and course time.

Mevo+ spin axis will be VERY accurate on center strikes assuming your environment has low interference.

The gear effect on off center strikes is impossible for the unit to measure in a limited flight setup so the solution is simple:

Ignore off center strikes and make improvements to your swing based on the data from center strikes.
