Matty you knocked it out of the park with this introduction. Thanks as always for your weekly contributions.

Hoping for a wee bit of wind and wet, a proper East Fife welcome to identify the true Champion Golfer of the Year.

Edit: well I see I typed a little too long and M4TT has beaten me to the punch! 🤓🏌🏼‍♀️🏌🏼‍♀️

My excitement levels are getting close to being sky high. Not quite sure how I am going to feel come the weekend and us leaving to head down to St Andrews.

I know that I am totally biased and I am quite prepared for people to tell me that I am wrong but for me, The Open and this one in particular is The One!! I feel incredibly fortunate as a golfer to come from Scotland. Whilst the days of our golfers winning The Open with any regularity are long gone, to live in the country which gave birth to the game and regularly hosts the oldest championship in the game is incredible. I don't know for certain but I think that within this Country I must be in the top 1% of those who could consider themselves obsessed with golf.

For all of those reasons, this, 150th staging will for me be the biggest Open I am ever likely to see. Come the 200th, I will be happy to still be on this mortal coil and if I am lucky enough to still be here I will be of an age that getting down at watching an Open is likely to be beyond me so unless my son becomes as obsessed with this game as I am but also plays it an awful lot better than me and manages to qualify for an Open between now and then, this one is The One. So anyone who thinks I am going OTT, please for this week, just let me 🤣🙂

Anyone else getting the feeling Tiger will announce his retirement after this Open?

Maybe not an announcement, but this will show just how competitive the post-crash Tiger can be.

Realistically, I think he can finish top 15, but if he limps around for 75-75 MC then I think it probably is over.

I inherited my distaste of porridge from my father who took my siblings camping to the Trossachs c 1950. He alleged porridge was made from sawdust swept up from floorboards.

Being a salmon fisherman, Scotland starts for me north of Dunkeld and in the Dee Valley. Hope it’s a good Open for you.

The Open and The Masters. Flip a coin for me…..they are the only two must-see events in golf and the only time I’ll watch golf instead of playing golf.

The 150th, and at St Andrews — doesn’t get much better. I am hoping for one glorious sunny day and one where the weather is so foul it’s nearly (but not quite!) unplayable.

Just clarifying the above statement, are you trying to say St Andrews is one of the dullest towns in Scotland?

Wonderful stage-setting post, Matty.

I have mixed feelings about St Andrews as a venue. Certainly it is the home of golf and as such deserves its place in the rota, but unless the weather cooperates by doing its part, it is no longer much of a test for today's players if they can commit themselves to playing it in a certain manner and avoiding the worst of the hazards. It is not unique in that regard as Woods proved in 2006 when he bunted it around Hoylake for a win, but St Andrews needs wind and rain to be a challenge to these players. Still, I look forward to it (except for the terrible NBC Scottish-jig music on their broadcast).

Here’s another take….

“This has been a master class of tactitional golf. It's really been fantastic to watch.”

Later, Faldo described Woods' ball-striking as "sheer perfection."

Yes but not during Open week of course. I’ve spent winter weekends in the auld grey toon. Greenlaw, Coldstream and other towns and villages are similarly miserable. One reason is many places I visit are on salmon rivers, the locals keep their fiddle to themselves.

Tactitional? 🤔

I realize a tactician may play tactical golf, but I'm at a loss with that one.

It was meant as a compliment to him - rare for me, I know, but true. He had the mental discipline to know that he couldn't hit driver there, especially the way he was struggling with that club at the time. So he simply wouldn't do it, because he didn't need to. He was hitting his irons just fine, and under the conditions there they were going almost driver distance on some holes. He checked his ego at the clubhouse that week.

Hoylake 06 is the only thing that I’ve seen ballstriking  wise to rival his 00 Open exhibition at pebble.  It’s one of the best highlight reels on earth.

Man, I hope Tringale goes wire to wire at the Scottish.

Was trailing Matsuyama in the Japan tournament and every shot or putt he'd wave to the crowd as politely as they cheered him.

I remember thinking that if this wasn't the nicest guy in golf then I didn't want to know the truth.

Going to Monday’s practice day. Think the previous Open winners are playing a 4-hole competition over holes 1, 2, 17 & 18. Looking forward to it. Was there back in 1990 (Faldo’s year). Tickets were a lot easier to come by back then - i was given 5 day passes (by a publican i know well who couldn’t attend) and flogged them to turn up punters for less than RRP on the day. Paid for my night out in Dundee afterwards.
