Does anyone carry sand/seed when they walk?

Recommended Posts

I walk 95% of my rounds with a push cart and have never carried sand/seed with me. I'm a bit of a picker and usually don't leave much of a divot, more like bruised grass. However, I will occasionally take a healthy sized divot (especially when i chunk it 😬). So I'd like to see what other people do about this and if there is a good solution.

When I take a push cart I carry sand.  However I prefer to carry vs. push.  When I carry I do not take sand.  When I ride I make sure to use up the sand bottle at least twice filling others divots (replacement sand on 5 and 15).  I know many riders who will fill several divots after their own.  I know it is not perfect, but for every walker or lazy rider who does not fill, I hope there is a good soul coming behind that will fill more than just theirs.

Oh, and I am a digger so I need plenty of sand.

My course has the big bottles like those on a riding cart, but not the small tubes. Problem is, there is no where to really put the big bottle on my push cart. I was hoping someone knew of something that clamped to the cart that could be used to carry it. I guess i could try to attach a draw string bag to the handle and put the bottle in there.

Clic gear sells this.  I would imagine it could be modified to fit any cart.

If there is a vessel to use, of course we carry it while walking (well, not literally, it travels in/on the cart, we do not carry it). Just put it in one of the pockets of the bag or use the holder in the cart if there is one.

Interesting that I have never thought about it when I walk but I always throw some seed on my divots when I ride a cart. I do replace my divots when I walk but hear that throwing seed on there is much better. Maybe it should be something that golf course offer as well for walkers to have it on them

Yes, I almost always use a push cart so I carry a bottle of sand. Although honestly it usually feels like spitting in the ocean. I can easily use the entire bottle just sanding divots I find on the first two fairways. So I do one bottle worth of divots on each nine, only a couple of them are generally my own.

On the extremely rare occasions I carry my golf bag on my shoulder, I do not carry sand. But that's maybe nine holes a couple times a year at most.

I am little shocked at how many golfer don't bring sand. I walk nearly all my rounds and always carry a large sand container. Typically it spends lots of time in my hand as I will fill any divots I come across when walking from shot to shot. We had filling stations at each hole, so I replenish as needed. I actually went to using my own sand bottle as I prefer it the ones most courses offer.

My son uses this at our CC. Just has the cart guys fill it up before he heads out. Then I use the leftover seed at home where the dog has peed on the lawn. Works like a charm!

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

DIY solution:  re-purpose an old water bottle as a seed-sand holder -- clip it to your cart/bag or glove/towel loop with a carabiner or some other fastener.

Yes, I believe it to be inconsiderate not to. Going to take at least 18 divots per round...gotta fill them. If you have turf that comes out in one pelt, replacement works too.

We don't replace divots on our Latitude 36 (Bermuda hybrid) grass fairways.   We just fill the divots with sand and they completely heal over in a few days.

I generally go thru 4 to 6 bottles of sand per 18 holes.   I'm somewhat obsessive about filling in unattended divots and pissed that some of my fellow club members don't properly care for the golf course.

I predominantly walk with a push cart.

Not everybody is playing country club conditions with "refill stations". lol

Which is kind of weird right? Yes there is capital cost adding the buckets to each hole, but in doing so you are very inexpensively helping maintain your course. So yes I play out of a private golf club, but you would think a public club would encourage players to fill their divots just as much. It not like supply players with sand and seed, is luxury?

On a similar token, a local public club I play at, has a sign at their counter with a basket of ball mark repair tools:

"Repair tools - $50.... Free if you will use them."

I always got a kick out of the sign and sure they get better than average compliance with fixing ball marks.

Most players ride, and most courses I play at have sand on the carts. Of course, they're almost always filled right up, and only a few players actually use them.

I will also say, in Michigan, divots are the norm with our type of grass. I think course design has a lot to do with divot problems. Fairways with collection areas are the worst!

My club had sand bottles on each nine near the first tee as well as "refill stations" in the middle of the nine holes. They did away with them all at the advent of COVID (not joking, they literally removed sand bottles from the course under the theory that you could catch COVID from them). Last year they put them back out near the first tees but the "refill stations" aren't coming back.

Which is why I said upthread I gladly grab one at the start of each nine but run out after a couple of holes because there are so many divots out there and only so much sand in one bottle.

There's one guy I play with from time to time who usually walks and carries one bottle like me. But on the days he rides in a cart, he stuffs the little basket on the back of the cart full of sand bottles before each nine. He must fill well over 100 divots during the rounds when he's riding, god love him.
