I like the length and lie of the Ping, but the loft of the Cleveland

I could easily play 13 clubs: D-3w-7w-hy-6 to U-54-58-putter. This could find a spot in my bag.

 

Most golfers would benefit from this club versus a higher lofted wedge.

Actually, it's not exactly an 8-9.  It's about 1" shorter and much more upright.  I believe the lie angle is closer to a putter.  It makes it easier to use a putting stroke and keep the blade flat on the ground.

 

Not for everyone obviously, but for those that struggle with chipping it could save some strokes.

I think these look cool, and will probably be more popular than we realize. It's actually a smart club for lots of amateurs to have in the bag. It's setup as a putter and designed to be used with your putting stroke, I would think you would order same color code as your putter.

EXACTLY! My dad emailed me contemplating this club, and my response was basically "what's the point of having two 9 irons in your bag, especially when you can only put a full swing on one of 'em"

Go find a range that has a chipping area, grab a 7, 8 and 9 iron, and learn with those clubs.

It kind of amuses me that some people are so vehemently against some of these newer, well-designed chippers.  Golf is supposed to be fun.  If using a chipper makes it more fun for some, then what's wrong with that?  I've got buddy that's a terrible chipper, to the point where he might not find the green from two yards away.  But practicing for him is not fun, so he won't do it.  Instead, he'll just go out and play and frustrate himself multiple times a round, no matter which club he has in hand greenside. Guys like that (and there are a lot of them) would potentially get much mote enjoyment out of a round of golf with this little extra help.

I said no judgement here.  Use away and if it helps use it.   I simply said it was a small market share for this and sort of surprised Ping offered this.

in my opinion, as long as it soles flat at setup, then you are good in terms of lie angle. i am outside of the bell curve for male height and proportions, so i know i will need to mess around with the lie angle a bit. i ordered 2 flat as a starting point, but i know i dont want it to be too flat.

It's true, a good teaching pro w/ chipping lessons improved my game significantly.  We did full short game and it was a game changer.

Haven't watched the Crossfield video yet so don't know if it's covered...  Is this club basically for the fringe/apron only?  How far might one be able to carry the ball onto the green - 10yds, 15 yds..?

 

I'm happy with my current short game options but can see this as much more useful than low lofted irons or high lofted wedges in many peoples bags - and not just old people...

He takes it out to 100 yds...a lot has to do with the terrain.

Just sent a question to Ping on how they would recommend fitting for length. The marketing materials advertise the Chipr as being the length of a putter (35"). However, due to being short with short legs, for a putter, i fit into 31.5" as determined during my Ping PLD in-person fitting at Ping HQ.

Someone needs to put a Fuji X-firm putter shaft in it. 607 CPM. don't know of anything more stout than that.

While I appreciate the sentiment, I play with several guys who are double digit handicaps with terrible short games and zero time or interest in practicing. What time they can dedicate to golf, they use to get out and play. So something like this definitely does have a market, not as big as it probably should be,  it it’ll sell just fine.

Im with you -

My wife is ex Div 1 softball- know what she hates?  Practicing 

 

Know what she's loves?  Actually playing ....she's above average putting. She texas wedges everything... chipR is right up her alley.
