Grip sizing

Recommended Posts

My 8 year old is playing a set of the USK TS 54, and they need new grips. I had him at the golf store with me today and they had a chart measuring hand size to recommend grip size. He’s squarely in the middle between junior and undersized/women.

Two questions:

- Any thoughts/opinions on how to decide which size to go with? He struggles with a shut face as a datapoint.
- I guess to fit a women’s grip on a USK shaft it’d really have to be built up? Any concerns?

He's 8 so lets set our expectations to maximize his fun and enjoyment.  What I did was put my son in the GP Tour Velvet Undersize (56 core) as his step from junior to a standard grip size.  The good news is that GP does a great job in giving you options.  I also regrip my son's irons whenever they need changing and I've only ever had to do one wrap of tape for him regardless.  I never needed to change grips on a set of US Kids clubs though because my son grew faster than he'd wear out grips but if you need to revive some grips that are already on you can try cleaning them with some warm water and Simple Green Club & Grip Cleaner.  This is a $7 solution instead of a $50+ solution.

As for mitigating the shut face, I'd go see an instructor instead of relying on a grip to fix it.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

We bought the USK set used from a member here, hence the need to regrip. We’ve “revived” the current ones a couple times.

How old was your son, or how did you figure out, right time to move up a size? It’s frankly nothing I’d thought about for an 8 year old until yesterday - the shop was out of junior grips which sent me down this path of measuring.

To your point, I’m just trying to maximize his fun. He’s got some game, but he’s not doing anything competitive really yet. I mentioned the shut face as it seems to me to be one of the things potentially pointing to going up a size in grip. And it’s something his coach has suggested previously (“does he have big hands?”) regarding his tendency to get to a super strong left hand.

I’m probably going to throw a bigger one on a couple clubs and see what he thinks.  Was just curious how others have handled.

The Winn Junior grip is an excellent choice as well.

I’m with heavy_hitter on this—Wynn junior dry-tac grips are cheap and good.  Last year when my son was 54” the junior grips were a great fit.  Now, at about 57.5” he’s growing into the undersized/ladies grips.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ended up putting a Winn undersized on an extra club of his just to test it out. Used three wraps of tape just to get to the point where it required a little bit of pressure to get grip on, but even with three, while it feels ok at butt end, it’s super squishy near the bottom.

His hands look good on it though, tips of left fingers just barely touching pad of left hand. So not sure if I just build it up more to get snug fit, try a firmer undersize grip to see if that requires less build, or just keep him in junior grips.
