Statistically most boring player every year since 1980 (AKA most fairways and greens)

Yes , LOL

MtlJeff is the low index amateur equivalent of all of these gents. It's a miserable existence. These guys musta wanted to gouge their own eyes out.

Earlier this year i had 6 rounds in a row of 77 or better from the tips with zero birdies. It's pure misery just watching every putt miss

Read Pelz book, his PGA research on this is truly eye opening. Shooting 77 and under that many times with zero birdies shows you have tremendous talent. If youre not giving yourself 6 birdie chances a round inside 20 feet youre playing the wrong tees. With your skills in scrambling and course management you should be shooting par or better from one set of tees forward and i believe your putting confidence would go up

It was a humblebrag really.

But seriously, shows you’re a very consistent ballstriker, a thing that will never be said about me, ever.

Getting better at putting is easy, but boring. You just lack the discipline, face it!

My reaction to everything Dave Pelz says (other than recite pure, uninterpreted data…).

really? hes using PGA tour data thats 100% backed. Reading those #s you know what putting distances you need to practice

Sorry - feeling a bit snarky - moving (for the 15th time) and tired of seeing the local moving company goons treat our stuff like it’s new member night in the state penitentiary shower…

I like some of Pelz’ discussion based purely on research and testing (fall lines, which putts break more, etc).  However, regarding his techniques - I’d quit the game before I’d chip like he recommends, putt like he recommends, or use a mechanical clock method for distance.

I know those things work for many folks and that is awesome.  Many ways to skin a cat and each person must choose what makes most sense to them.

What I find really interesting about Calvin Peete, Joe Durant, and Jim Furyk as being the only players to lead more than 4 seasons in this particular stat I tracked is how similar they move the club in their downswings. They all shallow the club in transition and they get both the club and hands down really low at P6 (clubshaft parallel to ground in downswing) on the same plane as they set up on, not unlike Ben Hogan and Moe Norman. Pretty cool stuff.

I just don't want to deprive my playing partners the baited breath waiting to see if i throw my putter or not. I think this is 90% of the reason they play golf at this point.

Oh ok, now I follow. Yeah the technical side isnt for everyone, thats for sure. I meant more on make percentages inside 25 feet , the importance of getting your chips inside 6 feet  and better inside 3 feet etc..

Hope the move goes well!

I beg to differ.  The most boring tour pro would be the one with the lowest percentage of birdies or better (YTD stats):

2001: Jeff Julian (16.2%)

2002: Fulton Allem (16.0)

2003: Gavin Coles (14.2)

2004: David Gosset (13.7)

2005: Jim Carter (14.6)

2006: H. Tanaka (14.8)

2007: Todd Hamilton (15.0)

2008: Stephen Leany (15.0)

2009: Brad Faxon (15.5)

2010: Craig Bowden (15.6)

2011: Rich Beem (15.3)

2012: Billy Hurley III (16.3)

2013: Bobby Gates (15.7)

2014: DH Lee (15.2)

2015: Jim Renner (15.9)

2016: Robert Allenby (15.1)

2017: Steven Bowditch (13.4)

2018: S Kodaira (17.3)

2019: JJ Henry (14.1)

2020: Martin Trainer (16.8)

2021: Nick Watney (17.1)

2022: Bo Hoag (17.0)

The most birdies or better?

Phil: 2001, 2013

Tiger: 2002, 2005-2007, 2009

Vijay: 2003-2004

Ryan Palmer: 2008

Tom Gillis: 2010

Webb: 2011, 2020

Rory: 2012, 2014

Jason Day: 2015

DJ: 2016, 2018

JT: 2017, 2019

Bryson: 2021

Cam Smith: 2022

My only question is, "Who is Tom Gillis?"

By this logic, shouldn't most boring be most number of pars, not fewest birdies?

Yeah I think you're right, lowest birdie percentage really just means you're not very good or not playing at Tour level. Doesn't factor in bogeys to go with it. If you look at the names it's all no-names or players in a slump.

Had to bump this thread, so apparently in the 2000 U.S. Open that Tiger won by 15, he led the field in this particular stat with a combined rank of 15, how uncanny! He also led the field in the ball striking stat with a combined rank of 3.

Tiger set the record for highest stroke differential field average in a tournament with a +7.31 average in that U.S. Open. Second highest was set by Henrik Stenson in the 2016 Open Championship with a stroke differential of +7.15.

Now, if you use fairways + green in that particular tournament, Emiliano Grillo would be first with a rank of 4 and Stenson would be second with a rank of 6, even though Grillo would end up losing by 19 strokes. However, if you bring up the ball striking stat, Stenson led the field in that stat with a combined rank of 2 and Grillo with 7.

If you add those with their fairway and green ranks, Stenson would have a lower and better rank overall than Grillo at 8 (#5 in fairway + #1 in green + 2) whereas Grillo would be at 11 (#1 in fairway + #3 in green + 7). It turns out, if you apply this to the 2000 U.S. Open, Tiger would be #1 in this combined fairway rank + green rank + ball striking stat as well!

Interesting stuff. Thanks for compiling and posting this.

Calvin Peete was before my time, but I certainly remember Joe Durant being a very impressive striker. I'm only surprised Tim Simpson never topped the list in any year of the 1990s.

Edit: Just looked him up. It looks like he had some medical issues in the early/mid 90s, and he was evidently not as accurate a driver of the ball as I assumed he was based upon watching him hit balls.

Joe Durant - interesting background.

I don't know enough about these guys, but is there a common element?

I assume they are all on the shorter side distance-wise.

But is a fade/straight/draw predominant?

Lietzke had the best total driving stat out of all of them in 1991 and he faded 100% of the time. He was definitely not short.

Allenby made up for it by being anything but boring off the course.  Even JD kept his distance from him.

Jim Furyk. Ugliest and best swing this millenia. Constantly on the fairway for 20 ys. No Woods/Reed barbed wire eating down the stretch on sundays specialist. But mr 58 and mr 59.

Furyk's swing is effective. Sure he didn't have lot of speed but Jim is a solid iron player and was always in the middle of the fairway. I'd take that any day of the week

Does anyone else notice or think it's extremely incredible that Jim Furyk can lead this stat in 2002 and in 2020, 18 years apart?! That's a long time of hitting great, consistent golf shots.

Not really. His swing was the ugliest and the best, never had a swing drought, and he did always have magic on and around the greens. His only problem was that he was too nice, with some Tiger/Spieth killer instinct down the stretch sundays he wouldn’t have won just one major and even more Pga tournaments even if he won many.

By no means boring, mr 58 and 59 and always a smile not far away. Just loved it when he mimicked the Villegas spiderman move.
