Starter Iron Set $200 budget

chch3

Recommended Posts

A buddy of mine is getting into the game and he wants to get a set of clubs.  He was looking at complete starter sets and I told him to not waste his money.  I told him we could build a set.  My question what iron set from the past would be good to get for $200.  I have always played blades, cb’s, or players clubs, so I am not up on the good game improvement clubs.  I was thinking about getting him a set of pings, but I don’t know which ones are better than others.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Black dot ... ZZ-Lite shaft, ideally.

Everything else is fighting for second place.

Still have mine in the basement. Not going anywhere, either.

find an old set of bridgestone j33 or j36 irons, the pocket cavities are really good. And have a longer blade length.

Another vote for the Eye 2 or Eye 2+.  Both of my boys learned the game on used sets.  I still play mine that I bought new in the 80's.  Indestructible, easy to hit, and readily available.

Use the Ping color chart as a base guideline if your buddy is larger or smaller than normal size.  But as @tatertot said, black dot, ZZ Lite shafts will be fine for most.

Added benefit of Eye2 over many old sets, including the Eye2+, the Eye2 are conforming.  Except in pro competitions, that is.

Any of the Pings mentioned are a solid option. If you want something more modern I would look for a set of Adams irons. Their prices have remained relatively low compared to the other brands and the tech and quality is solid especially for a first set. If you look for something like the Adams A7 or A7OS the set also includes hybrids. For me these are the best modernish clubs for the money.

I’ve done what the OP is doing. The Adams lineup of irons are really fabulous clubs for very little money. The Adams Idea Pro Forged is a larger CB with tungsten weighting and a triple radius sole that feels fantastic and is as forgiving as any iron. Also has a nice top line and the shape is great.

I’ve in the past given a set of these as a gift to a player just starting out and I think the entire set was $150. Pretty incredible for the quality of that design. The MPF numbers on it place it as game improvement. High MOI, low and deep CG.

I would say Ping Eye 2's.  The suggestion of the Maltby Pak's from Golfworks are good too as they have quality components.  The only issue is if your buddy only plays a couple of times and doesn't think golf is something he will stick with, the resale on the Maltby's would be considerably less than the Ping Eye 2's.  With the Pings he'd pretty much be able to sell for around the same price he bought them.

Older Ping G series, Callaway Big Berthas, X12,14,HAWKEYES. Something along those lines from either brand or Eye 2s. Check out a local Play It Again sports store or local marketplace for deals. One could also go to a online site such as 2nd Swing or Global Golf and put together a 7-9 club set. Use the search function and look up “Minimalist Bag”. You’ll get some ideas.

Take an afternoon and visit pawn shops and thrift stores. Lots of good suggestions here, but I've found lots of good sets for about $3-5 per club at thrift, or $100-150 per set at pawn shops.

An excellent set would be the Callaway X20 irons, circa 2008. Lots of sets available, although many cost in the $250-300 range.

TM Burners will work for a beginner, although halfway decent set of 5-PW will start at $300 for steel shaft, and $400 for graphite.

Ping G30 irons (2014) run around $300 and above, and follow-on Ping G irons (2016) start at $400 and up.

Again, these are online prices. You might be able to find a better deal at a second-hand sports store, or a private purchase.

Due to COVID-supply chain disruptions, used golf clubs have really jumped in price the past two years. Same for used cars. (I guess we should be thankful that golf club heads don't have computer chips inside.)

I was really surprised at how much the X20 and Burner sets cost - 15 years old.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New OEM tactic: Some manufacturers are unloading prior-cycle iron sets through Second Swing and Play It Again Sports. That way, their own sites and the golf shops keep up the appearance of scarcity.

Yes.  Soooo much nicer to hit than something like the eye 2.

The Ping i5's are the Ping that I would consider in the $200 zone.

Woods/Fairways:  Callaway with Mitsubishi shafts

Irons:  Srixon with Dynamic Gold shafts

Another vote for Ping Eye 2+.

Or Ping G10 or G20 if the price is right.

Be mindful of the dots.

Ping Eye 2’s are obsolete for modern irons imho. I would suggest trying to find a set of TM Rocketbladez or Speedblades at your target price. Anything in the Ping G line beginning with the G20 or the Titleist AP1 of any year. Wilson’s as mentioned above can be had for a little less and are good quality clubs too. Good luck.

Wilson Staff, totally underappreciated, I recently sold a set of C200 irons for $140 and had to throw in a beat 3 wood just to make sale. Also, a big fan of G irons from Piing.
