How do you like the full face jaws ?

They feel great! Wedges aren’t my strong suit but I like the weight and the feel through the turf so far. Haven’t had them for too long, so it’s early days.

Small Update

1. Titleist TSi3 Hybrid is coming out and staying out of the bag. Just isn't working for me and I'm losing confidence when I pull it out. I've tried to de-loft it down so that I can play it as a 22* to see if I could play with one less iron in the bag but at this point, I'd prefer the Rogue ST Pro 4 iron (that's really a 3 iron).

2. Callaway Apex UW 19* - I found this at a local golf shop and was surprised to see it. Callaway didn't issue many of these in Australia (AFAIK) and they can be quite hard to find. I'm glad I took the plunge, I love the 41.5" length, the Hazardus Smoke Black RDX is great too (I didn't think I'd like it), and it's just the ultimate confidence club. I've been starting to play with 12 clubs in the bag recently with D, UW, 5-AW, 54 & 58, and Putter and I get a reliable distance and height and gaping for where I normally play.

3. Titleist TSi3 Fairway - The 41.5" length in the Apex UW is making me think perhaps I should cut down my TSi3 3 wood to 42.5" - any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I've currently got the TSi3 set up at 16.5* and I'm finding difficult of late to get some height and I'm curious if cutting down the shaft by half an inch will help with that.

3. Full Face Jaws - these are amazing wedges! I haven't got too much else to say on them, they feel great and I feel really confident when approaching a shot with these.

4. Ping Anser 2021 - This is a great putter but I'd love a fraction more forgiveness and I may try and find a Quintic fitting or similar to see what will be the new putter moving forward. I'll use the funds from the sale of the TSi3 Hybrid to fund it's replacement.

5. Cobra SZ Xtreme - Again, this has been reliable but I'm now reaching 105mph CHSS and am reliably getting 150-155mph ball speed. My path is in-to-out and I'm hitting up 2.5* but am averaging only 200-220 metres (218-240 yards). I might check in to see what the newer heads are doing in the upcoming months.

First off, great bag and great thought put into it.

Second, with those swing stats, you should be averaging much longer than this.  I'm old (with a slower swing speed) and drive the ball 225-235 yards.  I'd bet you aren't making consistent contact with the sweet spot.  Use some foot powder spray  or similar on the face to locate where you are making contact .  I suspect that with regular sweet spot contact you will see a jump in distance.

Best of luck and enjoy the journey.

Thanks for this - you're right, it's certainly an inability to find the sweet spot consistently. I'm also finding that the landing angle for the driver is high when hit well (40-45 degrees) which is not helping carry or total distance. That being said, it's the driver I've been using since I started and may need to look at a new one when I'm more consistent.

Since this post, I've maxed swing speed to now 107mph and ball speed at 160mph (1.5 efficiency) when hit well. At the moment, my hands are causing me an issue to not square and find the sweet spot (cupping at the top of the swing) and have been doing some drills to rectify this with success.

When hit well, the driver is going 235m carry and 250m total (257 yds and 273 yds respectively) - as said, when hit well. It's certainly an ability over equipment limitation.

I'm also curious with this issue for the 3 wood, I'm not getting height and the Apex UW is starting to threaten it at 19*. I like the club head but I'm curious if the shaft is too stout for me at this point in time (avg SS is 101mph for 3W).

Thank you for your commentary, I really appreciate your input.

As mentioned in the above post. What's causing me a lot of issues of late is my hook on every swing. This had been caused by getting my hands into a cupping position at the top of the swing and not fixing it in time for impact. It's also aiding to a loss of energy in the swing that causes it to be inefficient.

To fix, (ignore my ugly mug), I've been doing a drill to lift the club at takeaway by about 5 inches vertically, then rotate my chest and have my hands get in to position as per below:

681576889_handposition.jpg.0787e6de4f139df29d52f677f952fe2f.jpg

Once set in position and after a pause, swing through. It's been a tough drill but rewarding.

The following are examples of improvements: (Rogue ST Pro 7 iron 30.5*)

Speedzone still is a great stick! It’s the longest serving club in the bag.

In other breaking news…

The TSi3 3 wood is having issues, the club head is great, but I’m struggling with launch. I swing the 3 wood at a peak 101/102mph and average about 97mph with 2° down trying to compress.

I have a hard time launching the ball above head height. The Tensei white is obviously a very stout shaft, could someone recommend a shaft that is similar to the tensei but a bit more ‘whip’ in the mid section?

There’s a few Graphite Design shafts on FB marketplace where I am that look tempting but I thought it may be worth asking the GolfWRX community first.

A local club builder was having a sale on used shafts and managed to find this as a possible solution for the TSi3 3 wood. I’m excited to see how it hits (hopefully with more launch) and I’ll report back.

Small update - it's been incredibly egotistical of me at my level and my ability to be playing with a 3-Wood and UW in the bag when I'm still learning to make efficient and consistent contact with the ball in my irons. So, moving forward, I'll be playing with just irons & wedges.

I might put the hybrid back in but I want to really nail my irons and concentrate on getting that right before I start worrying about fairway woods and drivers.

Going back to the KISS method haha!

In other news, something 'spooky' is on it's way...

Initial impression

  • Stock stiff flex at 91g is perfect for me,
  • It doesn't feel laboursome or boardy,
  • It feels like the clubs is connected from the grip to the club face, it's a feeling I've not felt with another shaft,
  • You can definitely feel the steel shaft inside - it feels like it's the 1/10th of a normal steel shaft but a direct tubing to the club head, I don't know how else to explain it, and
  • It feels great to enjoy my hybrid again!

  • TreqJosh changed the title to TreqJosh's Bag

Bag Update 24th Nov

A couple of changes have taken place. Now playing 13 sticks rather than 14 - as above, the 15° fairway is beyond my skill and ability level and as such, it's up for sale in my location. This goes for the UW also. The direction now is to simplify my bag and make choices on the course that put my shot in best contention. Also, playing irons is allowing me to concentrate on my swing.

Driver: Srixon ZX7 MKii w/ Project X Smoke Black 6.0

I got this for a steal! There is a discount golf store across from my office that has great prices that are simply unbeatable for some items in Australia. I got this for $490 AUD. I've stuck a new MCC+4 Midsize with two papers underneath. It's an experiment and I'm not throwing away the Speedzone (I've learnt on GolfWRX that you don't sell great putters or great drivers), but I'm going to line up a shaft fitting one day soon to see if I'm getting the best out of it. Sound of the ZX7 seems to be more slightly muted than the SZ Xtreme but I'm yet to take it out on the course.

Hybrid: Titleist TSi3 w/ NS Pro Modus3 GOST

As above, I found the x-stiff Tensei white is too much for me and I wanted something a little different - the GOST so far has filled this spot. It doesn't get the distance that the Tensei White does but it launches well and stops better too. Really been enjoying the feel of this club now and really happy it's back in the bag.

Bag Update #2 25th Nov (lol)

So... twenty-four hours is a long time in golf 🤣

I managed to squeeze in a driver shaft fitting today to see if I could get the most out of the ZX7 MKII. I also brought along my Cobra as I've only had the ZX7 for a week and figured it would be prudent to put the two together.

The ZX7, I had a really hard time launching, which is strange as it's 0.5° more lofted than the Cobra and features similar shafts (ZX7 w/ the Hzrdus Black & the Cobra w/ the Tensei White AV). The main difference between the two heads is that the ZX7 is a lot lighter in feel and the comments I received from the fitter is that I was subconsciously trying to manipulate the swing to get the lighter ZX7 to work. So, ZX7 is experiment is over and it's welcome back for the Cobra!

Today we tried both clubs heads with a range of shafts. My stats indicate an AoA of 5-6° up and swinging in-to-out. The commentary was that the more stout Tensei, Hzrdus, Ventus Black was more comfortable in my hand but the stiff tip is causing the ball to spin too much (3100rpm) and lose distance.

So, we tried Ventus Red 6-X & Ventus TR Red 6-S - stiff handle, a bit softer tip section - same issue - spun too high (2900rpm), though less than Ventus Black.

In came, the Ventus Blue 6-S - just didn't feel right and we quickly subbed out after 3 swings.

Then the answer came - Ventus TR Blue 6-S - dispersion tightened up, distance increased, and spin dropped to 2400rpm with a 260 STD DEV.

What came out is going to be the reigning gamer that refuses to get out of my bag:

Cobra SZ Xtreme w/ Fujikura Ventus TR Blue 6-S

Haha…yeah, things can shift quickly in the Club Ho world! 🤷🏽‍♂️🤣

I’ve definitely learned that you have to play what works best for you…that’s all that should really matter at the end of the day.

Damn straight!! Gotta be on your toes in this club ho game! Haha!

Couldn’t agree more! I really liked the ZX7 but if it isn’t for me, then it’s out! Quick experiment that I won’t lose money on.

Final Update for 2022

I’ve just finished my last exam for the year and it’s coincided with the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales (for some reason, we now have in Australia despite not celebrating Thanksgiving). In saying that, there’s been a couple of additions:

Ping G425 3 Wood 14.5° w/ Alta CB Stiff

Managed to find one of the last G425 3 woods in the wrapper online. Used to own the 5 Wood and found it to be quite easy to hit (I don’t know why I let it go). So I’m hoping that’s the case for 3 wood.

I know I’ve sworn off 3 woods, but I see this as an investment and from all reviews this club is one of the more forgiving 3 woods out there.

Odyssey Stroke Lab 7 35”

My very recent tracking of my rounds (Golf Game Book) has been screaming at me to improve my putting and what better way to do that than replacing the putter with a new one and disregard any advice of lessons. It’s the previous model, I love the look of it and excited to see how more forgiving it may be over the Ping Anser. I’m hoping a fang mallet putter will provide more stability through the swing.

Ballnamic

Whilst studying and enjoying a bit of procrastination; I tuned into TXG’s Ping Ballnamic episode. I figured I’d have a go too. So my recommended ball to be using is the Bridgestone Tour B X.

Summary

To summarise, my bag is set and ready to go for 2023. Next year, there won’t be changes to clubs (with the exception of a possible shaft change for the G425 if needed) and I’ll be investing my spare time in getting to know Sydney’s golf courses more and improving my game.

Bring on the 2023 bag is set challenge!!

TLDR - The bag has now become about forgiveness and less about ego.

As there’s only a 1° of separation between the T100s & the Rogue St Pro, maybe I need to evaluate the hybrid… but I’ll wait as I think the T100s will carry 5m less which will be ideal.

Hmm…
