Which Miura iron is the “Gold Standard”

Recommended Posts

Long story short.  About 5 years ago I tried my first Miura set with some CB57s.  Got the taste and ended up getting some MC501 irons.   That wasn’t enough so I bought some MB101 and made a combo with the the 501/101 and a new 301 in the 4 iron. Eventually bought some Miura wedges too.

needless to say I loved the Miuras but after a couple years I just got bored and had the itch for something new.  So being the club Ho that I am. I got rid of them and have tried everything under the sun since.

Currently playing Ping i59. And although I like them. In the back of my mind I feel like I’ll never be fully satisfied until I get some Miura irons again.

what I’d like to do is get a set of Miura irons and they be my set of irons forever. Or at least the foreseeable future until I literally wear them out.  Believe it or not I’m actually tired of changing clubs. Having to buy new ferrules. Take them to the golf shop and have my exact shafts and grips, lofts lies blah blah done.  I just want a set I love and stick with them.

that all said. I don’t have the luxury of just demoing them all near me. And I was at different handicap levels when I played all these irons. For example when I first got the 57, I was barely an 80s golfer. Still shot in 90s often.  Then when I had the 501 I was a mid 80s golfer and even broke 80 for first time with them.  So my question is. If you were to get one set of Miura irons to last you for the foreseeable future. Which ones would they be? New or old?  I don’t mind even buying some older discontinued model and having them refinished to look new.

for me personally. I played the best with the 501. But I also had them for the longest period of time.  I’m not opposed to getting them again. Just curious if there’s anything better I might be bypassing

Love the Thread, here.

Once you go Miura, nothing ever feels the same again.

Plus, in my opinion, Miura Irons, the good stuff, are timeless.

I have several sets of 'Forever Irons', but the longest tenured, by a very large margin, is the CB-57.

My most commonly used setups are:

MCW CB-301 5 & 6 Irons

CB-57 7, 8, and 9 Irons

Raw Handgrinds 46°, 52°, and 58° Wedges

Raw High Bounce 62° Wedge

CB-57 6 Iron

MCW TB-Zero 7, 8, and 9 Irons

Raw Handgrinds 46°, 52°, and 58° Wedges

Raw High Bounce 62° Wedge

I also have a set of MCW MC-501s in the closet. I don't use them much at all, but if I were, I would pair the MC-501 Short Irons with CB-301 Mid/Long Irons.

TC-201 are hard to beat as are the KM-700. I made some tweaks to my TC-201s and now they’re starting to click and mesh well with the MB-101s I have in the mid to short irons. If you have gamed  those irons in the past, you may try a split set or full set of TC-201.

I am a bit biased here.  I have only played the CB57.  Have played them for 5 years and I still am amazed after each (most) iron shot.  Pure feel that cannot be adequately described.  Beautiful ball flight and consistent distances.  Very traditional lofts.  I find these clubs very forgiving despite the lack of hollow body, foam fill, tungsten weights, etc

Miura baby blades.

my first miura set was the 1957s original model baby blade, gamed them for a while and sadly sold them. Bounced around with different stuff, hated the mc501, hated the km700, finally back in the miura baby blade 2.0s and these will NEVER leave my bag. Thinking about getting a second set to have stocked when I eventually wear through the current set

I’ve owned most of the models over the past 15 years and always come back to CB1008’s.

there’s just something about them…which could be completely psychological at this point…that keeps me on the lookout for heads in good shape.

honorable mention to 201’s, 57’s, and straight neck 202’s

I am here with BigD77.  I have owned and played: CB57, Baby Blade, CB-2008, CB-1008, MC-501, MB-101, MB-001, CB-501, CB-301 (newer) and TC-201.....I really like them all in some way and would love to be able to play all of the sets (although I am not good enough to regularly game pretty much any of the blades....but they are fun when I want to change it up and take them out).  That being said, I have been gaming my 1008s over everything, and actually downsizing to focus on these and the 201s (which I consider generally equivalent).  I will probably go back to the TC-201s when I start striking the ball better again, but switched to the 1008s when I hadn't been playing much.  These irons seem to be just the right size to offer some forgiveness, with a better feel than some of the others in the lineup....and I love the way they setup at address.

I've done the same thing for a while...between 201's and 1008's.  I think i like the short iron shape a little better in the 201's, but I also find them slightly more demanding in the long irons than 1008's.  So much so that Ive always got a spare 4/5 iron kicking around to combo with other sets...even non miura.

My ball speed with the 1008's is quite high too...higher than other equivalently lofted irons.

Based on Muira’s marketing…and pricing, I’d say they want the KM700 to be their gold standard.

But if you’re looking for something to be a “forever set” - I think you have to choose one of the blades, either the 101, tb zero, baby blade, etc - I say this because the difference in a blade from today and 15 years ago is minimal when compared to the changes in cavity backs…and if I’m picking something to use forever, it has to be something that will still be relevant in 10-15 years, and to me, that’s a traditional blade.

Currently playing a set of CB57, fantastic irons, my fitter (who sadly passed away this year) had a fresh set in a box that he found in his shop and phoned me as soon as he found them. Safe to say I've put 80 rounds on them this year. They are just the best. short blade length but forgiveness for days.

CB 57 and CB 1008 are both hard to beat. That said, I haven’t owned a set of Miura blades (yet).

love love love love the cb-57's.  Playing the km-700's now and they are great as well, but just more demanding to hit.  The KM's are just stunning to look at and well struck shots just feel amazing.  For me its a toss up between the two but have to say KM's are the new gold standard.

Same. I just bought a set of KMs and it took me about 20 swings to pure one. I’m not a scratch golfer but folks who say they are “more forgiving” than the MC are bonkers IMO. If they weren’t so pretty I’d ship ‘‘em off haha…

Simply agreed. 3 summers here.

Edit: I’ve bought multiple sets out of boredom but just always come back to the 57s after a few rounds, so I sold them all and I’m going to use the Miuras until they don’t work anymore.

I recently bought used sets of CB-501s and CB57s.  I thought they would be pretty similar, but I definitely got along better with the 57s.  Different shafts, but I don't think that had too much impact.  I think the thicker top line on the 57 gives me added confidence.  I'm keeping the 57s and look forward to playing them for years.
