Equipment brands you stay away from?

I used to be turned off by everything Ping made minus their putters.  Their drivers still don't appeal to my eye BUT the Blue Prints and i230 look sexy.  I'm always open to test/try anything once though.

Golfing about 7 years now and don’t plan on stopping. I refuse to buy a Callaway or Taylormade golf club. I know they will just replace them with the next model/variation in about 9 months and my clubs lose will lose a tremendous amount of value. They just remind me of a never ending machine flooding the market with the next set of clubs with a different color slapped on. They may perform good but they won’t get my money new or used

I am not against any particular brand.  All offend me with the new "advances".  They add titanium, tungsten,  cushioning inserts, cavity back, muscle back, laminated materials, forged, cast, hollow, solid-you name it.  All to get us to invest in the latest and best.  Something new every couple years.  Other than the loft changes in irons, have they gained us more distance or accuracy?  Probably not much but we chase it.  For me, I am waiting for the hollow irons filled with Flubber.

I have not and will never own a set of Callaway irons.  They just don’t look good to me.  I did have a few steelhead FW, they were alright.

TM, Cobra, and PING in that order.

TM stuff seems to be overrated in every category for my swing, but mostly feel. Irons feel decent but not great, drivers and woods seems to feel a bit artificial and plasticky, and wedges a bit harsh.

Cobra always gets me excited, but rarely makes it past 3 weeks in my bag. Irons (Ive not tried the new ones) always looked a bit too cheap and underperforming.

PING is a niche brand it seems like, and Ive not jumped on it. Ive tried my fair share, and G400LST was a beast for me, but I always feel like I leave something on the table in terms of distance with PING products. Everyone who has played PINGs, seems to stick with the brand, much like Titleist.

I don’t get along with callaway for whatever reason and that extends into Odyssey putters. I can’t stand the look or feel of anything they make  . I went in blind in a recent fitting and the apex irons felt ok but I couldn’t stand the top line on them. I assume everyone has a brand that just doesn’t suit their eye or feels odd or even sound.

I may be in the 1% but I have never owned a ping club of any kind. I have a hoofer lite, but that has been as far as I've gone. The shape of the driver throws me off, sound of the fairways is a little too offensive for my taste, their irons have never felt or looked good enough, and I've never even had the urge to try their wedges or putters. Never say never but I can't see myself bagging anything ping in the near future.

Am I alone in this or do others have brands they stay away from?

I'm with you. Have a hoofer, but that's as far as I'll go with ping. Never cared for the look or performance of their clubs.

Vokey wedges are another for me. Although it's been a while since I've hit one of them. But they performed terribly for me.

Thats ok.

They only built stuff like Anser putters, G and I series irons. G and I series drivers and 400/410/425 drivers are a little bit popular on Golfwrx.

Become a Golf Ho. Buy a Ping a month. You will find the Anser is near!.

Callaway. Not 100% sure why. Association with oldness? Unattractive design?

Funny thing is, when I was a kid, before I ever played golf, I thought Callaway was like the highest quality, super classy.

Anything outside the big 4 manufacturers, sadly.

The likes of Srixon, Cobra and Mizuno make great products, but unfortunately you can barely give them away in Australia so those are bad choices for a club flipping ho.

Even Mizuno?

Not that I’m calling you out, I just figured Mizzy would be a good brand in Australia

My experience is that you get around 1/3rd of new for really good condition current model Mizunos.

Around these parts, I think only fringe golf nerds (the type that hangs around forums) know about Mizuno and how good their irons have always been and their woods now are.

Pxg, Honma, Srixon, TM. Looks for me is a big thing and TM definitely does it the best. I bought a stealth 3 wood….first club I’ve purchased without testing first. Worst mistake ever. I’m a HUGE Callaway guy so it’s sad to see so many people hate on their products…. They get a lot of hate but one word of advice I can give everyone is go get fitted and bring a open mind into the fitting. You’ll be surprised at what the results will be. I was fitted for irons last year before hand I was playing a set of pings…. Tried p790, Ping g410, honma, t200,t100, and then finally tried out a apex 21/apex pro iron. Immediately felt a huge difference. The most forgiving irons I’ve ever hit and they fly off the face and land soft on the greens. Even in the apex pro model if you miss it you can feel it for sure but it still almost carries to the same number. Sorry to ramble…. Just my experience. Everyone is different.

I don’t even consider callaway clubs anymore, as every time I’ve tried them I just cannot hit them at all. Even when my coach gives them to me without me knowing (grips down etc) I cannot hit them.

The other one now is Taylormade. Had a bad experience with an M3 driver that cracked and they tried to blame me. The replacement M5 also cracked and every putter of theirs I’ve owned has chipped yet I’ve never had any issues with any other putter maker.

That and both manufacturers release clubs that plummet in value every year. I don’t change clubs often so I like some resale when I come to change.

I have the good fortune to be able to test and try pretty much anything out there, and I usually do.

I'm more of a committed Ho, in that I buy lots and never sell.  Give away to frens sometimes and stuff, but rarely sell.

I've found that I tend to avoid certain feels and sounds, rather than brands.  I cannot game a Ping driver and the 425 LST was one of the best performing I demo'd.  The sound is truly awful.  I will go to the opposite side of a range to avoid hearing it.

Callaway. I've worked at a golf course and have had the WORST experiences with their sales reps and customer service. Probably will never purchase a single thing from them.

Totally understandable, but that’s on the Sales Rep and the CS people you worked with. Nothing to do with their product or quality, right?

I kinda get Ping as a polarising brand…. To me they will always be home town hero’s but in saying that I’ve been disappointed in quite a few of the more recent products. To not try one of their putters is a bit puzzling to me, if you’ve played an anser style head why wouldn’t you try the people who invented the style?

odyssey would be my stay away from brand (in saying that I own an one and I keep forgetting to sell it lol). I don’t like their poly inserts and I hate their garbage Chinese heads sold at premium prices.

I’ve noticed that with mizuno irons here

I've never owned a Ping or Titleist club. It's not that I wouldn't play them but by the time I saw a club that I would want I already filled that need from a different manufacturer.  I loved the TMB's and AP2 when I demoed them and would have played them no doubt.  I also like the G425 fairway woods and drivers but never got around to putting one in the bag.

Come to think of it I’ve never had vokeys either. Always found something I’ve liked better I guess.
