I hold on to pretty much everything.

I'll let my brother peruse my collection from time to time and let him have a club or two. Other than that, I'm a hoarder.

Luckily, I don't buy that much equipment. Some in my in-laws' basement. The rest in a backup bag at home.

You just never know when a 20 year old club might come in handy.

As a reformed club ho, a couple years back I sold/traded most all my extra clubs, sans a few sentimental faves, and still have 3 full sets for guests to use.....it was sort of hard but when I looked at what I had paid and what sold for, it became clear why not a club ho anymore.

Aside from 3 putters (which I switch between), and an old wedge I use for random chipping in the backyard I don't have any spare clubs.

That being said, I also rarely buy new equipment. I learned a long time ago that new equipment isn't going to make you play any better so these days the only time I upgrade is when I absolutely have to. When that happens whatever I upgraded from just gets thrown in the trash.

If you need help letting go just think about this... Do you really want to force your kids to wade through all that useless junk when you die?? My parents cleaned out all the junk in their attic a few years back as a service to me and my brother, and I'm very thankful for that 😉.

I have closets in the garage from shafts, clubs and such.  When I am gone, my son can pick and chose, then sell them and pocket some more $$$$

I am the type that "if I don't use, I don't want it around either" most of the time anyway. I swear nearly everytime I get to the garage coz of all the #@!! in there.

Get rid of it.

What I have done in the past is keep the longest iron in the set (3 or 4) and sell the rest. Then even having them shafted took too much space...

Maybe you guys haven’t yet experienced this with parents and such.  I’ll give my perspective but you might not like it.  Your wife, kids, and grandkids are not going to want all that crap.  It will be a giant pain for them to deal with, just adding to all the burdens they will already have.  A lot of times it just gets dumped at Goodwill or the landfill.

Save a favorite putter or 5 iron in case a kid would indeed like something from Dad’s golf gear.

No trouble letting go. Sold off a bunch of clubs this year: woods set, 2 irons sets, wedge set.

Yup exactly.  It's hard enough letting go in death, but it can quickly turn to a bit of frustration if they have to get rid of literal junk after you're gone.  Just think back to so called legendary clubs of 40 years ago, Ping Zings, Wilson blades, Spalding blades, Anser putters, etc.  What are those actually worth now?  Basically nothing except for the people who were around at that time to appreciate it and want it for some sort of nostalgic purpose.  Sure you have a few rare Ping putters that are worth quite a bit or the odd rare iron set that has a special finish or offset profile that was not mass produced, but by and large, this junk can be seen in every Goodwill from here to Timbuktu for between $5-$20.

Unless you have an actual reason to hold onto it (i.e. its a backup bag for guests or you're waiting to gift it to a relative who is starting out in golf), then trade it in or sell it and use that money for something else.  I've been in the industry long enough to see people hold onto stuff they think is valuable for far too long and it eventually becomes worthless.  Golf clubs are tools to play a game, not show pieces.

I have the usual accumulation of woods and wedges, a couple of bags and way to many putters. I am in the purge state, I just haven’t started as of yet! I know I need to start the process but have procrastinated too much.

I’ve kept my old set of Eye 2’s as a Sunday/guest bag in an old L8 carry bag along with a vintage Spaulding TPS III putter and a 1968 Anser putter which was my first. I have issues getting rid of them as they are the only set I have ever had, passed on from my Father after his passing.

Recently got “my own” retirement set of G425’s and will never look back, nor buy another set. Same for my putters, way to many accumulated over the years and was just fitted for a new Ping PLD Custom and feel everything else is now free to go as I’ll never do better than one built specked for me.

Last year we went through the whole property clean out of parents property and decided we should never leave our mess to someone else. Making our situation worse is we have no children and few close family members so more than likely our junk would end up at Goodwill or a homeless facility anyway. Which neither is a bad thing, just a lot of work for strangers.

I have very few emotional attachments to material things and “purging” is not the problem. Just the time commitment to do so!

I’d rather be playing golf 🙂

I’m finding it’s very expensive to sell/ ship used clubs via the Bay and other venues.  Unless the club is something special, it’s not worth the time and effort to list it and really, you don’t net much $$ in the end. I prefer to donate most of what I don’t use to local junior golf programs.  Keeps the garage clean and the wife is forced to complain about something else.

Posts like this make me feel better. I'm struggling to convince myself I've earned another set of irons when I only have one.

I’ve been a one in one out guy most of my life. I sometimes will keep some extras around, but frankly I don’t play enough to have extras anymore. Plus nothing I own is custom or rare, so I can always buy the same thing again later if I want to

One backup with few exceptions (i.e. maybe have a couple different style putters) is my rule of thumb. There's a reason most clubs aren't in your bag right now. Otherwise sell them or look for the kid/young adult that's on the course but sadly playing with a bunch of crap and help them out would be the way I go.
