Headweight vs speed

I have a Betti Inovai 8.0 that I love but I find that I am leaving everything short. I have tried to just "hit it longer" as everyone has told me, but that ends up screwing up my stroke.

So this has me wondering if there are any technical fixes I can use. Has there been any clear correlation between speed and headweight (or counterbalancing?).  A while back I remember a video from Scotty Cameron that suggested using heavier weights for slower greens but I have also read from superstroke that more weight in your hands can help if you leave it short.

As far as feel goes, I like a heavy head so just wondering if there is any advice on how I start my testing before I begin ripping grips off and/or covering things in lead tape.

Thanks!

Don't ignore swingweight when dialing in a putter. I had two putters that were similar shape, but one felt much heavier than the other. I liked how this putter rolled the ball, but the heaviness of the putter made it hard to get the ball to the hole. So I weighed the two putters, and much to my surprise the "heavier" one was actually lighter than the other. It turned out that the swingweight of the "heavier" putt was much higher, and that's what made it feel so sluggish. I backweighted it to bring the swingweight down and have putted great with it ever since.

The most important aspect of a putter for me is how it looks in my eye, and swing weight.  Mine is 34", D5 sw, and 360g head with 2x15g weights.  I have been happy using it since 2012.  Light weight is no good for me, as I need to feel the head, and play 9.5 to 11.5 greens.

F=ma. In order to increase the force applied to the golf ball, one will need to increase the mass of the club head or increase the acceleration of the club.

I’ve never understood why people say less mass for slower greens because you’re just going to have to swing the club head faster. If you’re playing slower greens, then you should be able to add a little bit of weight and keep a similar acceleration to get more force.

Bubba Watson was leaving putts short, so he switched to a heavier putter head in his anser D. Tiger adds lead tape for slower greens. If trying to “hit it longer” screws up your stroke, then I’d start with adding a little weight to the club head.

Tempo and headweight also work together for distance control. If you have slower tempo in your stroke, a heavier putter head could help get the ball to the hole if you're coming up short.

Good luck!

Shaft lean and loft need to be checked. Then you need to match that up to the green speeds you play on a regular basis.

I’ve checked on SAM twice and unfortunately I can’t blame loft/lie!

Yeah I’ve seen similar but it seems like as with most thing with golf, results may vary by golfer haha. Gonna tape a 35g weight to the bottom to see how an exaggerated difference feels.

That’s my thought as well. I play very quick greens with tons of break and I’ve always had a defensive stroke. Going to try adding some weight this weekend and see how it goes.

If you have a defensive stroke then you may have answered your own question. You can experiment with head weight, but it may be more about making a confident stroke.

100% right. Working on that but I’ve been a terrible putter so confidence is going to take some time (and lessons)!
