Driver not clicking when tightening with wrench

My VB on my epic max ls hasn't been clicking when I change loft settings on it. I make sure the screw is on as tight as possible. Am I at risk of the shaft coming off? I checked both the screw and the adapter and the threads seem to be fine. The other shafts i have recently tested did not have this issue.

Sorry for the piling on. The click is a cam inside the wrench that rolls over a lever when the desired torque value is reached. At that point , you didn’t want to keep tightening it “as tight as possible”. Hopefully your head wasn’t damaged from over tightening, but the wrench is toast.

Most likely the wrench just broke, they’re not terribly robust anyway, or the threads stripped in the shaft adapter, in which case you would know it, as it obviously wouldn’t tighten.

I had the same issue with one of my TaylorMade putters the torque wrench worked with one weight but not the other, I'd try another wrench but the adapter maybe the issue.

Like others posted the click is an audible indicator as to when you've reached the correct tightness, if you've worked on cars torque wrenches are common because you don't want to over tighten certain bolts on the engine block, auto manuals give precise numbers to avoid doing so. The wrenches are basically budget torque wrenches designed for one task.

Over the course of ten years with two drivers, a 3w and 5w I never tightened a shaft enough to have the wrench click, and never had a shaft come loose. Don't worry about it. If it comes loose you'll feel it long before it can come off.

I tried with my sub70 wrench. Still no clicks.  I am now worried something is wrong with the adapter

You'll need to clarify what you mean by "no click". Are you able to fully tighten and then the wrench won't click as though you could keep tightening MORE but don't want to? Is there any play or additional rotation happening e.g. something slipping or not grabbing?

As mentioned, the wrench is what clicks since it is a clutch designed to "break" at around 40 in/lb of torque. If the screw is tight and there is no slippage then there is no possibility of a problem with the screw or the adaptor. If there IS slippage anywhere then you either have stripped threads in the adaptor, on the screw, or in the screw head. The whole equation is dependent solely on the amount of force being applied, so the only possibilities are:

1) Faulty wrench that isn't engaging regularly at a consistent amount of pressure, obviously this is a wrench problem.

2) The amount of force to engage the clutch isn't being reached due to slippage (you would feel this obviously). Wherever the slippage is coming from is the problem (threads or screw head stripping)
3) The wrench isn't clicking when you expect it to and you're not applying enough force. This is either because of #1, faulty/inconsistent wrench, or user error.

No need to over analyze it. Tighten the other shaft and get a feel for how hard you turn the wrench to make it click, and then just tighten your epic max the same amount.  Then check the head every few rounds to make sure it's not coming loose until you are confident that it is on properly.

Whatever you do, don't tighten it as much as you can. That is a good way to strip the threads or maybe even break the screw.

If the screw keeps turning and doesn't tighten then it does sound like you have stripped threads on the screw or adapter.  Hopefully it's the screw that's stripped as that's easier to replace.  Do you have another shaft you can try in that head?

You guys have got me wondering about my own wrench tightening now lol what's the rule of thumb: one or two clicks?

It doesn't matter.  1 click, 5 clicks it's all the same torque amount.  The click is the torque wrench releasing at the appropriate amount of tightness.  You can't over tighten with a torque wrench unless the wrench is broken.

To answer everyone. The screw stays secure. No slippage at all. I just worry about over tightening. I know how much pressure to put on the wrench. I love done it with the other shafts. I guess for now I will assume all is ok since everything is secure and not slipping. Thanks everyone!
