Grooved swing vs Tired Swing

Recommended Posts

Curious if anybody else feels this.

I’ve noticed that without my swing looking much different there are times when it feels like a well oiled machine compared to just an old beat up sludge machine. 😂 lol

It’s really the best way I can describe it…again on video I can’t make note of hardly any differences but one feels so much more free & easier to swing. The other swing feels almost feels like I’m swinging under water as it just feels like it takes so much more effort.

Again just genuinely curious if others golfers experience this feeling.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

My swing starts to falter on really hot days or when I don't get enough sleep the night before a round.  It usually consists of the hips not rotating fast enough to get to my left side and my arms doing more work.  That leads to all sorts of trouble and unpredictable shots.

Interesting. Personally for me I feel it most in the arms which I believe stems from lack of using my core/trunk to power swing. When I get a bit tired I resort to using more arms and it's just bad all around.

Working on reps with Dan's straight arm drill using the range basket to get that core working again.

Generally, my swing is ingrained.  However, when my swing feels noticeably disconnected that's when my body isn't firing on all cylinders.  I notice this happening a bit more, suppose due to age.  Swing speed and ball and spin control are less, even weak.  My usual reaction to that feeling is more gym visits.

When I am feeling strong and connected, I want to smack the sh** out of the ball.  That's when I have max spin, distance and trajectory control, and I'd bet on my swing...

My favorite, and most frustrating, is the second-day-after-the-gym swing where I'm so sore and disconnected that nothing works properly and its like I've never played before.

When your body is out of sorts or tired, you no longer have the ability to compensate.  That’s why being stronger and more fit has fooled many people into think it solves swing faults

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Agree 100%.  I consider myself pretty fit as my job requires me to be and when I get exhausted for whatever reason, my ability to compensate like you say begins to deteriorate.

I think one of the skills in golf is learning to "listen" to your body for that day, hole, or moment, and making adjustments to combat whatever off feeling you may have.

Really like this and something I've struggled with...hopefully getting a lil bit better. My tendency has been to immediately want to fix and correct because my mind is telling me something is wrong. However, it never gets better especially while on course. This type of thinking has led to some of my more frustrating moments mentally.

Now that this is happened enough and maybe finally starting to learn from others I've become more accepting of this. I know that with video feedback the swing is not necessarily very different...it just feels that way at the moment. That gives me a bit of peace to let go of trying to immediately fixing any perceived swing fault and just listening to my body for that day/week.

Adam Young & Jon Sherman from the "Sweet Spot Podcast" have had some really good episodes on this and how they can make the necessary adjustments to get through a round with their C or D game.

Not just the physical body out of sorts, also mental stress can throw my swing off kilter.

I'm still not very good at not playing golf when I shouldn't. I just love the game so much that If I have a chance to play golf I almost always play. I really want to be able to listen to my body better.

I learn the most on the days when I feel tired and what I have found is that the better conditioned you are, the less adjustment of your low point you have to make.  By that I mean when I first get to the range and am warming up I usually  set my low point of my swing arc at 4 inches in front of the ball for any club being hit off the ground. I then note it as I play my round of golf and as I begin to fatigue I will notice a slight loss of leverage on a given shot or a shot that I was intending to hit straight had a slight draw to it and that is the red flag to make an adjustment immediately.  These are telltale signs that I am beginning to lose leverage and that my trail arm is likely beginning to straighten prior to impact and this is a no go.  The solution is to move the ball to a different place along my swing arc so that leverage is regained with no compensation to my swing motion. By moving the low point from 4 inches in front of the ball to the say 6 or even 8 inches in front of the ball my expected ball flight and leverage can be regained.  I always get my baseline on the range knowing that my low point will not be any closer to the ball during a given round because I am most likely to lose leverage during a round rather than gain it.  This is a more technical and mathematical way of dealing with fatigue during a round but it had done wonders for me holding a round together over the past few years because it forces me to stay hooked up mentally and pay attention to the details that the ball flight and strike is telling me.
