3 Iron Spot: what club is a must? Hybrid, utility, or driving iron.

I play a three wedge setup and a 4 wood so I have a little extra room at the top of the bag so I carry both a 20* hybrid and a 19* driving iron. They definitely do different things well.

The driving iron is a players distance 3 iron head with a lighter graphite shaft and is my fairway finder off the tee. I also use it off the deck for low runners and out of the trees.

The hybrid has a steel shaft and matches my iron weight and length progression. I use it for full swings into greens and as a rescue out of bad lies.

I have never really felt like any wood or hybrid was that much more likely to find the fairway than my driver, but with an iron I definitely do. However, that iron generally won't hold the green so I use the hybrid to gap with my 4 iron.

I have really liked the variety of options this has provided for punch outs, the hybrid does much better when the ball is buried, but I can hit the iron much lower and further if I can get a clean strike on it.

depends how you hit these. What are you looking for in this spot? Consistency obviously but are you looking for low, mid or high flight, what sort of spin are you needing to hold the green. Utility iron will launch the lowest with less spin, hybrid mid mid or if you are looking to get it high and land soft 7 wood. As mentioned some people like hybrids, I never got along with them and is why I went with the 7 wood. worked out great last round at 220 out up a hill on a par 5 not sure any of the other options would have got the height I needed with the ability to land soft.

I think more and more people are starting to go with a 7 wood as they are beneficial for a lot of players. A great one to look at is the Cally Apex UW which is shorter in club length which makes it a great option for most.
