Good point.  Although critiquing doesn’t bother me that much.  They are more or less saying what a prudent strategy would be in match play.  I don’t find that over the top.  These are the best amateurs in the world and they have broad shoulders.

I prefer honesty.  If they could not say anything that is negative, the broadcast would do a disservice to the players & viewers.  It is not Little League Baseball.

I see both of your points, and I agree to some extent about honesty, like if 1 of them hosel rocketed a shot into the ocean, I don’t want them to say great shot.  

 

There was 1 during the broadcast today and the girl didn’t get over the false front and I think it was Pressel that said that is a really poor shot.  The girl is seventeen and it’s not like she was trying to hit it there, she hit it bad, like all of us have.  I think the better way to say it was a poor shot was something like “in that situation, especially in match play you need to give yourself a chance or your opponent will gain a little momentum.”  This still describes the shot wasn’t good, but it isn’t as negative, like you would do with a pro like Lydia Ko or Minjee Lee.  I guarantee you put me on TV even at 45, someone is probably getting drilled by me on accident.

I agree Miss Baba has played some great golf.  Every I was rooting for is gone, so now I will root for Saki.  I hope that is not the K.O.D and a Baba loss in the finals would prove I am the real problem.   Saki Baba. -  Cool Name BTW

That is the best USGA trophy IMO.  Chambers looked beautiful as well.

This was very enjoyable to watch (we watched all that has been broadcast so far).

 

The course looked to be in great shape and the views were stunning.

 

We lived in Japan for a while so of course we rooted for Baba-san once the Americans were out of it : )

Watched quite a bit of the golf this weekend. Was happy to have a Canadian and a Japanese player in the finals. It's always surprising to see that kind of domination. Really impressive. She's been on the TV a little over in Japan, but that's going to change. Hopefully all of the accolades she receives won't stunt her progress. There are a lot of pitfalls. And for a young, pretty girl like her, everything will come easy.

Turned it on and Chun won the third hole (second round) to cut it to 5 down.  Then Baba birdied 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9.  Are you kidding me?  Anyone who has played Chambers knows those holes aren’t easy.  That was some amazing golf.

All I can say is, "Wow."  That was one heck of a performance by Baba.  Since the point was made that Beau Brushert was a caddy at Pebble Beach, I wonder if he'd make himself available to her for next year's US Open if she asks.

Wow, what a show!!!  Saki Baba is certainly an easy name to remember, and I think we're going to see an awful lot of her in the coming months/years.

Honest question about a player like Saki Baba.  You hired an American caddie, who knew the course, and you dominated.  But you need an interpreter for the TV interviews, which means you don't speak English.  How do you communicate with your caddie?  Unless the conversation between caddie and player are simple enough with regards to clubs and numbers?

 

Seriously, how does someone who doesn't speak English, understand their caddie, who doesn't speak Japanese?

Baba did a bit of online learning in English just prior to the tournament... the caddy on the other hand "spoke" with her with "golf sign language" -- for example when deciding how to hit the putt, caddy made the sign of a hole (circling his hands to liken a cup) and rudimentary sign language whether to hit it inside, outside the cup etc... 

 

As well, some Japanese certainly know how to speak rudimentary English (albeit "acceptable" to the Western standards)... However, it's not in their culture to speak publicly as they want to be "perfect" before speaking to you in English... perfect example? Hideki 😁  (who might be going to LIV, sadly 🙄).  Hideki certainly knows a bit more English that he lets on, I'm 100% sure of that
