GCQuad vs GC3, Club Add on

Recommended Posts

Trying to understand why the "clubhead measurement add on" is $4000 extra for the GCquad, when the GC3 measures 4 out of the 7 "clubhead add on" measurement included in the purchase price.  Seems like a scam to have to spend an extra $4000 for those 3 extra data points when the GC3 includes most of those 7 data point included in the price.  Why spend $18,500 with club add on for GCquad when you can get GC3 for $7500.   That's a HUGE difference in price for those 3 data measurements.  I honestly would've expected the club add on measurements to be included in the standard $14,500 price for GCquad.

The GCQuad measures the following (* means the $4000 club measurement add on is required)

  • Ball speed
  • Horizontal & vertical launch angles
  • Spin
  • Side spin
  • Carry distance
  • * Club head speed
  • * Smash factor
  • * Angle of attack
  • * Club path
  • * Loft at impact
  • * Lie & face angle at impact
  • * Impact location on the club face

The GC3 measures the following

  • Ball Speed (same as GCquad without club add on)
  • Horizontal & Vertical Launch Angles (same as GCquad without club add on)
  • Total Spin (same as GCquad without club add on)
  • Side Spin / Spin Axis (same as GCquad without club add on)
  • Carry Distance (same as GCquad without club add on)
  • Club Head Speed (same as GCquad with club add on)
  • Smash Factor (same as GCquad with club add on)
  • Angle of Attack (same as GCquad with club add on)
  • Club Path (same as GCquad with club add on)

The GC Quad was $11,000 not that long ago - I bought mine in spring of 2020 and that was the price at that time.  I think the issue here is you are trying to use logic in the prices and it is not logical from a customer viewpoint.

Here is my take - no insider information.

Bushnell bought Foresight and they wanted their own launch monitor.  They launch GC3 and create a crippled version to sell under a Bushnell label.  Then GC3 is really stepping on the GC Quad's territory.  So much so, customers are asking questions such as yours.

The Foresight/Bushnell marketing "people" are now thinking WTF do we do?  Some brilliant Marketeer says - lets hold back a few measurements from the GC3 and raise the price of the GC Quad.

With no better solutions, they run with that.  Think Dilbert.

IMO - they should have made the GC3 the little brother of the quad that starts lower than the quad, but with add-ons to the GC3, you could bring it very close to the quad in performance and features.

I think they wanted to broaden their market by bringing in a new price point, but in order to do that you have to do it in a way that makes sense to the customer - otherwise you might have just diverted most of your business to a $7,500 option that eats into the market of your former $11,000 + $4,000 unit.  If you did that, it was tantamount to putting a bullet to the head of your business.

There have been many classic goofs like this and they are almost always driven by a marketing buffoon.  They have an idea that seems to make sense from a financial sense, but since they do not understand what they did, they kill their business.

I am not sure why this is a "scam". The quad was that same price before the GC3 was released, foresight stands to gain nothing by lowering the price of their flagship product just because they introduced a much lower priced consumer level device.

Instead of being mad about the quad's price, you should be very happy about the GC3s price. For 95% of people, they GC3 is perfect and the best bang for the buck product on the market. For fitters, instructors, and professionals, the quad gives you all the data. Yes it's only 4 additional parameters (yes its 4 parameters not 3), but what other product gives you those 4 parameters for a similar price point?

Two reasons:

1) The Quad is quite old now - still the gold standard for clubhead measurement, but it was released in 2017.

2) The additional data points are quite significant depending on application. Face to path, impact location and loft at impact require calculations using the four dots on the club face, rather than the one dot on the BLP.

Maybe the marketing could have been clearer, but these are tricky concepts to get across to the consumer market.

I don't particularly see it as any sort of mistake by Bushnell / Foresight, it is inevitable that launch monitors will get cheaper and better over the years and erode their gross sales. Good news for us.

Vista Outdoor,  which owns Bushnell, Fox, Simm, Federal ammo, and a variety of other companies bought Foresight.
