Beltway Area over Halloween Weekend

Yeah!  I'm going to be in the DC area over Halloween weekend, hovering between Easton and St Michaels, MD and Arlington, VA.  I'm interested in playing a round at East Potomac, but have been advised that they get really busy at times.  What draws me to East Potomac is the fact that its listed on the Sugarloaf Social Club Hidden Gem list (as is Langston), and that it's a really decent price.

I no longer have any local contacts in the area who're involved in the government and/or military, so I can't guest myself into one of those courses, but I'm certainly open to other options.  What can y'all locals recommend?

Nothing against East Potomac but its rather bland.  Its main feature is the location on a strip wedged between National Airport, and a couple of the memorials. Personally I'd pass on it. Many nicer courses in the Beltway area.  Not far from Easton is Queenstown Harbor.  Two good courses there.  In the Beltway area on the Maryland side Blue Mash and Oak Creek come to mind.  About a half-hour north of the Beltway towards Frederick are five really good courses.  Worthington Manor, P.B. Dye, Whiskey Creek, Maryland National, and Musket Ridge.  Others might give some suggestions for the Virginia side of the Beltway.

Agree with Maryland recs. Blue mash that time of year is always pure. In Virginia, I would recommend stonewall or Westfields. I’m not a huge fan of Westfields in the summer months but in late October when leaves start changing its an absolutely gorgeous course. Stonewall is next door to RTJGC on lake manassas and is great if you don’t mind driving the 40mph from Arlington.

There is the Links at Perry Cabin that has a member for a day package in St. Michaels.  It is the last course Pete Dye designed before passing.  That being said, late October/Early Nov can be a hit or miss weather wise.  Typically I’d doesn’t start feeling cold until the middle half of November but Halloween can be cold.0

On a  line between the Bay Bridge and Arlington...

Renditions GC. Replica holes.

Falls Rd GC, not bad, easy-ish course if you never played it..

University of Md GC

Enterprise GC, nice enough muni in Bowie. Put new fairways in this summer, I heard, so not sure of conditions currently.

Slightly off a direct line.

Northwest and Hampshire Greens. Near each other, few miles N of the Beltway.

Way off but nice places

Worthington Manor etc previously metioned.

I recall three years ago they wanted $300 for a round.  Has it gone up from there? I played there a when it was called Harbourtowne prior to the Pete Dye rebuild and it was OK at best.  Hopefully Pete Dye's magic touch improved it.

The Preserve at Eisenhower not far from Annapolis is nice for a muni.

Bowie Country Club is an easy course if you want a good time with no lost balls, was in good shape last time I played.

River Marsh is part of the Hyatt resort in Cambridge, not too far from St Micheals. Have heard good things about the layout, and its pretty much right on the bay. A little pricier but not outrageous for that area by any means.

I've played River Marsh several times and I love the layout.  It never seems to be crowded as most golfers continue another hour or so down route 50 to Ocean City.  Depending on the time of year the eagle's nest and hatch their babies in the trees directly behind the 16th green. If you're putting and one flies over their size is impressive. The 17th and 18th holes alone make the visit worth it.  17 is a par three with about a 185 carry over a river with NO bailout area.  18 is a replica hole of the 18th at Pebble Beach, only the water to the left is the Choptank River and not the Pacific (but you're not paying $500!). Even the large fairway tree that comes into play off the tee shot is in the proper place. Nice lounge and food in the clubhouse and two other restaurants in the adjacent Hyatt.  The entire property has an air of quality.
