Why do many hybrids sit way open at address?

Dear all,

Please have a look at the picture. The white bar is the target line and I have simply put the club down to rest on the ground without any manipulation. Face sits way open. This is a PXG 0211 but my old Titleist 915H sits very similar. Why is that? Setup is pretty neutral, ball slightly forward of middle, handle slightly forward of ball. Unsurprisingly, if I swing it likes this, I hit nasty slices.

Cheers

I think you're addressing the hybrid as a short or mid iron - when it should be closer to long iron or fairway address position IMO

OP, based on the picture you posted, I agree with @animalgolfs

If the white bar is parallel to the target line, then the shaft should be exactly 90* to that line. The picture suggests you have some forward shaft lean.  Set the club down so that the shaft has no forward (or backward) lean and then see how it looks.

Also keep in mind that the sole of many hybrids is not completely flat from front-to-back or from toe-to-heel.  This is on purpose, to allow for the various shots that we might try with hybrids (which are often used as rescue clubs).  If you have forward shaft lean, you've changed the balance point of the club (I'm over-simplifying here, but the effective low point on the sole), moving it slightly toe side.  This part of the sole is rounded on purpose - similar to the heel relief on a wedge to allow you to open it up. So when you then "lay it flat" from this position, the club will naturally sit a bit open to target.

Open the face and use the bounce they say.

Underrated comment. So many people trying to hit ball first with their hybrids. Pro level play is to open the face like a bunker shot.

Take it to a clubmaker and have them measure the face angle in a spec gauge, which will measure it with a perfectly straight shaft angle.

With a driver, fairway, or hybrid, forward shaft lean will cause the head to rotate more open.  Vice versa for a shaft that has a little lean away from the target.  Irons generally won't do this, because the sole is not wide enough to create this effect.

For players who do not setup with a straight shaft angle,.....to get a head that sits "square" will require one that measures somewhat closed or open

Don't forget, setup on the toe side to make sure you make maximum contact with the face of your hybrid.

If this is a joke - masterfully done.

If it's not a joke...

I'd hazard a guess that you are doing this whole "golf thing" incorrectly.

Having said that, you've clearly mastered the skill of  "blaming your equipment" which is an important milestone.

With that in your bag, a mid 20's HCP and a charity scramble victory seem well within your grasp.

Now you are kidding right? No matter the face angle, you will always want to hit ball first with any club but putter, driver and the Xe747.

Hit the ball first with every club unless it's out of a bunker. Only hit the ball with putter, driver, fairway woods and hybrids. Optionally take a divot with irons, depending on the shot.

Back to the question at hand, my hybrids don't sit with open faces.

Is that you CPG? If so, kudos. Funny stuff, glad to see 'em back.

Limited audience to be sure, but good lord, for a select segment of the population, comedy gold.

Not holding it at all, it’s just resting in the fingers of my open left hand. I do not have this with my irons.

Still, the manner in which it's held is letting its head weight make it appear open.  Most Hybrids are square, least those I checked.  I noticed when testing, head design and weight didn't allow heads to just set square to a target, like my driver or 4-wood.
