Fitted for X stiff iron shafts…

Recommended Posts

I recently got fitted for the first time. I’m 28 years old and have been playing a little over 2 years. My original clubs were Taylormade Sim irons regular shaft and length. Wanted to get fitted for irons and ended up going with ping G425s. My fitter suggested Dynamic Gold 120 X100 shafts, so that’s what I went with. He also added an 1” in length and 1 degree upright. I can’t hit these irons to save my life. I went to a lesson to see what was up, and the coach did seem a little confused to the full 1” added. My driver club head speed is 102-104. Should I get re fitted? I went ahead and cut .5” off of them, but that hasn’t helped. I’m worried X stiff is just too much, or is it just in my head and the shaft doesn’t make that much of a difference?

Yeah, more detail is needed.  Are you hitting them heavy all the time?  Thin?  Shots are inconsistent?  Used to hook, now slice?  Slice before, now hook?  No distance?  As much detail as possible.  Although, a lot of time and headache could be saved by emailing your fitter back and detailing what the issues are so they can try and rectify them.

As previously stated, we don’t know your swing, your fitter, details of the fitting, or the nature of the inability to hit the clubs.

Worst case from a fitting standpoint, longer clubs go further.

Stiffer shafts have better dispersion characteristics, particularly when trying to fit someone who does not have a repeatable swing mechanic.

By fitting you with something grossly over length and stiffness, you very well might have produced the “best” numbers in the fitting environment with a setup that was virtually unhittable.

By cutting 1/2” off the shafts, you reduced the swing weight by 3 points. If it was D0, it’s now C7, which is quite light. This also made the shafts play even stiffer, and altered your lie angle 1 degree flatter, so that you’re now back to a standard lie.

Your initial thought is likely best. Get another fitting, perhaps with your instructor. After the fitting, share the first solution with the fitter.

Buying decisions should never be made based on suggestions.  That's not a fitting.  They should only be made by actually testing the suggested club configurations and seeing that it does get you better results (and the feel) than any other options.

Did you actually hit the recommended set-up during the fitting?

How many other shafts options or flexes did you test out during the fitting?

How did the "fitter" come to the conclusion that you needed +1" or 1* upright?

What's your wrist to floor measurement (WTF)?

Did you actually hit a club with those longer and more upright specs during the fitting?

What is the swing weight of the clubs you actually got and did you get fit for swing weight during the fitting?  Do the two values match?    At +1" that could end up pretty heavy if the builder didn't adjust it properly.

Not enough detail and way more questions than answers right now - but I've got a strong feeling that what you went through wasn't much of a fitting.

Unfortunately only a small percentage of people out there calling themselves fitters deserve the title and the trust.   So I would be careful about making any assumptions about what actually happened during this "fitting".

After any kind of proper fitting, there really shouldn't be any need for that much of an adjustment period.

Did you actually hit the irons well in the fitting?

Now I’m confused….I thought butt trimming actually made the clubs play softer….not stiffer.

No confusion. Butt trimming vs. tip trimming, correct. Making it shorter at all will make it stiffer than not shortened.

Effect of butt cutting alone (with no change to head weight) has very little effect on the stiffness feel of the shaft.   In theory it might be a little stiffer as the length gets shorter - but in reality for most it will be a negligible difference.

When changing playing length via different butt cut amounts - what happens to the stiffness feel is really all about what happens to the head weight.   e.g.  if one goes shorter - and adjusts the head weight up to maintain swing weight, the added weight to the head is what causes the shaft to play a little softer - not the change in length.
