Building Up Lower Half of Grip

I tried searching but couldn’t find anything….I’ve never built up just the lower half of a grip before so I’m looking for some advice please.

 

How do you layer each layer of build up tape? Say I wanted to add 4 layers to just the bottom half, would you cut the first layer half the grip length and progressively make each additional build up layer say a 1/2” longer to created a smooth taper? Do you make the first layer half the grip length and get progressively shorter with each additional layer? Seems like you wouldn’t want to have each layer the same length or it would form a ridge in the grip. What’s the best way to achieve this?

They do make grips with less or no taper.  Would save you some work.  Just google.

My 'standard' wrap is +1 full grip, +1 under right hand, usually just cut grip tape to about 3" for the lower portion of grip

I use a stepped shaft so I place the grip on the shaft and mark where the end will be.  form there I place a double sided tape layer on each step to reduce the shaft taper then add more wraps one 1/4 way from the bottom of the grip lower hand, then one 1/2 way then one full.  works for me, is it overkill..... YEP but when im gripping my own irons im not in a rush so why the hell not.  Everyone is going to have what feels best for them and it may take some time to figure that out for yourself.  

 

just remember to rotate each layer so not to run a seam due to the slight gap in the tape

Yes sir, I know about those and have some, but I’m working on something I’d like to build up with tape.

My method is to mark the shaft 9.75" from the butt. 

Then layer strips 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", Full

Blown on grip with a compressor.

Et Voila / Bob's Your Uncle !

It works great! I do it to all of my clubs now. I use full .015 buildup tape on my wedges and and standard .010 tape on everything else.

Thanks I ended up landing on a mid-size grip (cp2 wrap) with 5 full length of build up tape and 1 double sided. Really liking it on my irons and wedges so far.
