Collin Morikawa's bad short putting

I have been betting on Morikawa and obviously not doing well. He is ranked 75th putting so not too bad, where he failed is at short putting. During the St. Jude Tournament, he missed 5-6 putts within 4 feet during the 3rd and 4th rounds. If he has made those and he should have, he would be in the mix. In the last two years, he has changed putters 3 times and went from conventional putting to saw grip, to a mix of conventional for long putts and saw grip for short putts and now conventional putting grip for everything. The stats tell it all. Hope he can figure out his short putting woes. I put $20 on him again for the BMW championship 😀.

 

Overall putting: 75th (~180th last year so big improvement)

Putting from 5': 193rd

Stats don't tell it all when the metric is lousy. "Rankings" are a bad metric. You could be 2nd in the world at something, but so far behind first that "2nd" is bad. Or you could be ranked 20th, but so close to first that it's statistically insignificant.

 

This is why we have Strokes Gained. It's an objective measure of a skillset. Morikawa has a net GAIN of 0.134 strokes per round putting.

 

Outside of SG, we can look at make %. From 3-5' he has a make % of 84.44.  If he made just 1 more putt every 20 that he'd face from 3-5', he'd be top 50, if rankings are important to you.

Superb Briny Baird drop. Say what you will about the Chang's hat, but the dude had his own style. Remember that era? When golfers had their own style? Back before all the Nike guys got the same shirt package every week.

 

As for Morikawa and his putting, these things go in streaks. When he finds it again, he'll win. If you're betting him, look for the signs that he's finding it, and then fire your barrel. When he is switching grips every couple rounds, marshal your resources.

Omg I remember that commercial when it came out and it was so cringe.  He went from the classy and timeless Ralph Lauren look from his US Open win and banked with an Izod deal with that douchy, preppy look.

I walked into an Izod outlet and was immediately turned off of buying anything because the product photos they had up on the wall featured a model who had clearly never picked up a golf club in his life

Go check out the putter he just put in play in the WITB Tourney section. While it mights look great and have great feel. It’s one of the most unforgiving IMHO. You get a little wiggly or off with that style on those testers and it miss city.

I think we all have played the game long enough to know that when it comes to putting it's a whole different game. Sometimes you just can't seem to miss and then there are other times nothing wants to fall. He's fine and doing well not everyone can have a year of their life and repeat it. Look at Justin Rose as he was so good as some of it was because of equipment change but when it comes to putting it's all between your ears

It does to me…I definitely see the potential advantages of the stoke but for someone who likes to feel the club the release in all strokes, it feels god awful to me and I miss short putts so I definitely have thought about swapping over to it.
