Loft/ Lie Machine Calibration?

NerdyGolfer

Recommended Posts

I bought a second hand loft/ lie machine that seems to still be in great shape but the measuring device seems to be off. Is there a way to calibrate it? (I know it’s off because it’s very obviously off by multiple degrees and stock clubs at certain degrees don’t measure out correctly, by like 3-5 degrees)

is this something someone has had experience with?

thanks!

And it’s tolerable to use because I know where the club measures out then bend it X degrees where it needs to be. Would just be nice to have it read, bend and read at the right measurement.

Find someone with a spec gauge and check/adjust a few clubs, such as a PW, 7 iron, and 3 iron.  Now use those clubs and check the readings on your machine, and tweak the measuring device to assure it measures accurately.  That's what I did for my bending machine and now it reads to within 1/2 degree.

@DFS PFD i have one of those. I use the holtzman guage and old scotland bending machine. I don't worry much about lie as I just use the sharpie on ball trick and bend til its right. BUT loft is another thing. Using the holtzman guage, the trick i've found is to use a credit card (preferable metal) to lean on the iron face until is squares with the grooves and machine edge, then use the klein electronic guage to measure.

My new mizunos where within 0.5*. If we believe Mizunos come accurately i think my method works pretty well.

There’s a ton of little info in here that I’m kind of following…

what do I use the angle gauge for?

and sharpie trick? Never heard of that

and can you explain the credit card trick you are talking about? Sounds like this is to make sure the club is placed properly in the machine (if I’m following correctly). If you know of videos on this, feel free to send rather than explain in detail. Thanks!

Do you know of any videos on how to adjust the machine itself? I have an old golf Smith, looks similar to the lower end ones golf works sells. And spec gauge I assume you mean the block “club” golf works sells as well? I think golf mechanix makes it.

do you know of other spec gauges?

You could also have a calibration club set by a club tech that you trust.   Could save you some coin

Basically send them a club, they bend it to specific loft/ lie and adjust my machine to that?

Golf Works and Golf Mechanix both sell a calibration block.  I would think they are universal to every brand.

Yeah that’s actually what prompted me to write this was seeing that on their site. Know of anything that isn’t over $100 lol

A spec gauge is a common clubmakers tool.  It measures (accurately) loft and lie.  Measure some clubs, then use the same clubs on your machine and see what the scale reads.  It's best to measure a range of different loft/lie clubs, not just one.  Since the scale may be accurate at 34* loft and 62* lie, for example, but off at 60* loft and 65* lie.  It's always best to verify accuracy though the measurement range.

I'm not familiar with your machine, so I can't tell you how to adjust it.

That is an unhit mizuno 221 5 iron. Assuming mizunos are come perfect I’ll take it

Mizuno has a tolerance just like every other manufacturer.  Generally +-1* for loft and lie.  Everything has to be measured after the club is assembled, to have full confidence that they are on spec.  They do not come from the factory this way.  Lots of them vary within the tolerance.

Don't use any club to calibrate that has not been measured in a spec gauge, by a qualified tech with experience

I’ve seen a few of these, might need to pick one up. Are the entry level ones worthy of spending money on?

Yeah I haven’t bothered calibrating my Scotland. I just bend and check in the guage
