Scotland in October

Headed to Scotland for 10 days of golf at the beginning of October. Going along with a group of guys who have been several times, but this will be my first time there - I am basically just tagging along on their itinerary. Speaking of which, here is the list in order of what we are playing:

  • North Berwick
  • Gullane #2
  • Luffness New Golf Club
  • Kilspindie
  • Carnoustie Championship
  • Royal Aberdeen
  • Cruden Bay
  • Murcar
  • Fraserburgh
  • Dumbarnie Links

As far as what to bring, I have been browsing the forums for recommendations but am thinking the following:

  • Kentwool socks
  • 2 pairs of shoes (both waterproof)
  • Pair of shorts
  • 2 Pair of pants
  • 1 Rain pant
  • 1 Rain Jacket
  • 2 long sleeve base layers
  • 1 Quarter Zip Pullover
  • 1 wind breaker
  • 5 polos (planning on buying a few while I am there 🙂
  • Goretex hat
  • Baseball hat
  • Beanie
  • Rain gloves

Am I over doing it? Am I missing anything? Figure I can get a lot of the layers into my golf checked back and have one other bag that should be fairly compact. Would love any thoughts/recommendations!

Will you have access to washing/drying machines? If not, you may want to add a couple more pair of pants and drop the shorts. You may want to look at bringing a bottom base layer if you get a cold day. You won’t need the shorts, temps will be low 60’s to high 40’s. I would take either the qtr zip pullover or the windbreaker no need for both. If you get colder and need another layer just use your rain jacket. Besides that, looks good. Only other thing you may want to add is hot hands or some cart mitts if your hands tend to get cold. I’d recommend bringing a few towels with you as well. Hopefully you don’t get too much rain, but if you do a couple extra dry towels will help.

Don't have access to washer dryer so thanks for the heads up on the extra pants, and you are right in that I probably won't need the shorts.  My windbreaker is so light and thin that it's super easy to pack, but also doesn't provide much warmth which is why I planned to bring both. Good call on the hand warmers and towels! Thanks!

Every month is considered the rainy season, lol. Last two trips I’ve taken to Ireland and Scotland in October weather has been really good. Had 1 day of rain out of 7 in Scotland, and had 1 day of rain out of 10 in Ireland. Now, the weather can change at any point, and statistically Scotland averages 5” of rain for the month of October, however it’s best to just plan to get a day or two of rain and if you don’t it’s a bonus.

I bought a new KJUS rainsuit and had to wear the jacket for about 9 holes total out of a 7 round trip 😂

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst...

Exactly, although we only had 1 rain/wind day last Ireland trip it was biblical. Coming down sideways with 30 mph winds…

Thanks for the info 😉

I will be ready as I did play the old course in 2014 in March and it was perfect the first 6, rain the next 6 and snow/hail the last 6!

Just getting a feel for the what it could be like.

Got my Galvin top and sunice bottom with tuque, and mittens - I will be ready

I wear short every day(Texas does that to you) but I have never golfed in shorts in October in Scotland!

How many are in your party?

As I have said in another golf thread, I golf a lot and so far this year I have only had to cancel golf 2 times since April - once with 50mph(I played one day in 40mph winds at Cruden Bay and then 50mph winds at Royal Aberdeen that afternoon with Texan friends, it was just hockey in the afternoon) winds and another with rain!

It seems to be cooling down now here in the North East but still great golfing weather. I have played a few holes two of the last three nights at 7pm.

One thing I did have a laugh at last night was one of the visitors, turned out a nice American, took 3 minutes to miss a level, one inch outside right putt. No wonder it was 5 hour rounds yesterday, normally it would be 4 hours for visitors and caddies. I chatted to the Scandinavian 2 ball at the end of all the visitors and they were still loving there day despite the stupid slow round!

12 guys in the party.. yeah maybe ambitious to bring a pair of shorts, probably not worth the luggage clutter.
