It's hard to understand what exactly they're doing due to the vague business technobabble. It partly explains why they've been so friendly in recent months, playing together in Ireland, playing together at St Andrews before the tournament.

The stadium idea, I'm not sure how that will work in a stadium. Hitting targets like Skillzone in the old Tiger Woods games? Playing a short par 3, closest to the pin again and again. Chipping contests? Would like to know more.

It'll be short game in the stadium and drives and approach on the simulator. I think. 6 teams....

For everyone complaining about LIV golf saying it's not real golf...exhibitions...teams...Tiger and Rory would never do something like that...They're only focused on Majors and Legacy....etc

Well I think Tiger and Rory just replied..."here, hold my beer."

What a spectacle...and not in a good way.

Exactly.  Tiger, Rory, et al weren't mad about new formats to golf.  They were mad they weren't first to market with it.  All this talk about being not in it for the money and wanting to "grow the game" is mindless bilge.  This is 100% a business venture aimed at making a lot of money.  Don't get me wrong I am not against anyone doing that.  But Tiger and Rory announcing this now comes across as completely disingenuous.

They've been trying to get this going for two years. Per Mcilroy.

They have been discussing/planning this for years…

“McCarley said the idea of using technology to broaden the sport has been the focus of conversations he’s had with Woods and McIlroy over the years, as he and Woods's agent, Mark Steinberg, "have spent hours together over the years talking about how good primetime golf is but how difficult and expensive it is to execute."

“McCarley bounced the idea off his mentor, Ebersol, who immediately bought into the idea and helped McCarley refine the concept.”

Other notable investors include former longtime NBC Sports executive Dick Ebersol, sports business veterans John Collins and Eric Grubman and a roster of athletes that includes former NFLer Larry Fitzgerald and F1 driver Carlos Sainz.

I'm sure there were talks years ago as far as some kind of side project business venture.  That I believe.  But the idea that this particular endeavor took over 2 years to put together I don't believe that.  I also don't have any reason to take the establishmentarian golf class at their word.

Just remember that real golf played on courses is an existential threat to golf because it doesn't have a Q-school. But golf played on simulators is an important part of the future

This is honestly amazing. Are we all on a hidden camera show?

I will watch this BTW, i like the idea....I just love even more that Mcilroy is involved and the tour is behind this.

Because this is replacing the PGA tour and Tiger and Rory are giving up their membership to do it?

Dumb.

Why does everything have to change and go high-tech?  One of the unique things about golf is the LACK of Jumbo-trons and all that nonsense.

This looks like a trip to Dave & Busters to watch someone play video games.

Just because Tiger sunk his name and money into it doesn't mean its' good.

Just another attempt to sell golf as 'hip' and 'cool' for the valuable young advertising demographic.

LOL!.....It's their answer to top golf......

Via the partnership with the PGA tour the participants would have to be members of the tour to participate, so in a sense qualifying for this thing is more defined than LIV's non existent qualifying criteria.

I believe it's mostly generally accepted that LIV was originally proposed to co-exist and even partner with the tour, much in the same manner as this.

Now that I think about it, this is not much different than the WWE.  A new arena every other week on Monday nights.

I can just imagine Tiger dressed as the Undertaker and Bryson with arm-bands a-la Randy Macho-Man Savage.

"Monday Night Golf-RAW"

I sense Vince McMahon had his fingers in this......

If the players don't all get theme music....I'm out!

There also needs to be a lot of talk about who the 3rd partner will be on a team....and then MA GAWDDDDDDD WHOSE MUSIC IS THAT????  Followed by a Chris Jericho style entrance

Only problem is golfers are incredibly boring and their theme music would all be like, Nickelback

Its a pretty complex project.

Look at who’s involved.

That piece mentions Eric Grubman as an investor.

Who’s he?

EVP of the NFL until 2018

Now he’s Chairman of DroneUp, a funded autonomous drone startup.

Partner at Goldman Sachs early career

So, there’s a number of people and moving parts here. Takes time.

That was the PGL proposal with a different group of investors.  LIV "barrowed" PGL's ideas and struck out on their own.  That said, I don't LIV exists if the tour took the PGL more seriously.

This might be entertaining for 30 min on TV just because of the banter/back & forth between the players but Idk how they're going to make this fun or people sitting 100 yards away trying to watch them hit into a screen. Not to mention whos going to pay for a seat? Or concessions? Sounds like a swing & a miss...

Also, 2 months ago exhibitions and new golf formats were bad? So was guaranteed money? Weird how that changed.

So. you think that they're trying to sell this as real golf?

Edit. Sorry, misunderstood your comment. I'm pretty sure there's quotes from the article where Rory calls it exactly that...

Woods said: “TGL is the next evolution within professional golf, and I am committed to helping lead it into the future. Embracing technology to create this unique environment gives us the ability to move our sport into primetime on a consistent basis alongside so many of sports’ biggest events. As a big sports fan myself, I’m excited about blending golf with technology and team elements common in other sports. We all know what it’s like to be in a football stadium or a basketball arena where you can watch every play, every minute of action unfold right in front of you. It’s something that inherently isn’t possible in traditional golf — and an aspect of TGL that will set it apart and appeal to a new generation of fans.”

I have the utmost respect for the game of golf, and the TGL, while rooted in the traditions of the game, is taking a bold step into the increasingly tech-fueled future of sports. TGL will tap into the appeal of team golf within an exciting, fan-friendly environment, comparable to sitting courtside at an NBA game. TGL will widen the appeal of golf to younger and more diverse fans and serve as another avenue to introduce people to the game I love.” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said: “The TOUR has been committed to aligning our athletes with innovative technology and this initiative combines that vision with a unique golf atmosphere. A primetime experience featuring PGA TOUR players will help attract a broader audience to our sport and the world’s greatest players.”

Sounds like they think this is an exciting "golf" format to me.

Meh. I like that it's separated from the real golf, unlike LIV.

No, I'm saying who in their right mind is going to go pay for a ticket to sit and watch people hit in a simulator from 100 yards away? I can't see people going to that outside of the first one as well as it sounds like this will exclusively be held at a custom built arena. So good luck getting people to travel to see this joke

People pay to see all kinds stuff and watch on TV

Like that Mutant Ninja Warrior

Is packed

Leap Of Faith Nbc GIF by Ninja Warrior

You get Tiger and Rory and it’ll get action.

They just need to figure out how to work in hitting balls a stuff and the things explode 💥 🤣

It's exactly that, technology meets pgatour golf......I don't think that they're trying to supplant the Tour with the blessing of the Tout.
