Junior Club Question: r5 better than a junior driver?

I am pondering having the shaft and grip of my son's Top flight junior driver moved into an old Taylormade r5 head I have laying around in my garage.  Is this worth it, forgiveness & distance wise?  He is 12.

I imagine he would pick up 10/15 yards, but I am not sure.  He is starting to make better contact more often, so my wheels are now turning.  I have been selling off old equipment and I am thinking it might be worth more to repurpose, rather than sell.

I've been there, twice.   It seems the critical equipment junctures are at 10 years, 12 years and 14 years.  So much going on with growth spurts, puberty, long arms but no arm strength, lower body takes over, etc.   After age 10,  I always went a little longer and little heavier than was recommended by US kids.  Weight of the equipment is key for kids up to 12 years.  After 12 - you need to experiment a little. 

 

Try going to the golf store or range and have him hit some used drivers.  It might help you both pinpoint some of things he likes.  He might like the look of club or the feel of the grip in his hands.  You can then take your common sense and his input to make a wise choice of what comes next.

Considering the Top Flite Junior clubs aren't great, I would switch it in a heart beat.  I would expect though at 12, the shaft in the top flite isn't the correct shaft for his swing speed.

Golf is mental.  I know for sure I would like to have something new or in this case new'er to play with.  I will tell you one thing for sure, he won't lose anything by making the switch.  

 

You will find out shortly that soon your son will demand the latest and greatest and you will go out and drop serious $$ to get it for him. 🙂

US Kids Golf Drivers are built to save weight first.  Ball speed, CT, COR limits may or may not come into play when designing them.  Found out a long time ago that USKG Drivers just don’t have that pop off the faces.  My kids stopped using them after they turn 10 or so.

 

With regards to the R5, it should still be okay for use.  But driver technology has progressed significantly since the R5 came out.
