Looking for a reasonable private club within 1 hour of west LA

picked up golf living in NY for the last 7 years and now i am on the west coast and the public golf in and around los Angeles pales in comparison.

Does anyone know of any clubs that dont  require sponsorship? money isnt too much of an issue regarding fees but im not trying to join one of the crazy expensive clubs.

Thanks in advance for the help

Plenty of discussions on this subject in the CA thread....in short the answer to your question is no and not really.  I moved her from the East Coast 7 yrs ago (Phila) and thought "....great, I'll have 12 months of sunshine which means golf all of the time". I couldn't have been more wrong.

The are a few clubs that you might want to look at like Candlewood CC in Downey - not great by any means but I believe their membership costs are not outrageous.  Also, depends on what part of LA you are referencing?  If you are north there are more options (and somewhat more affordable) as you head towards Calabasas.  If you're South or West you are more  limited to Mountain Gate which is decent but starting to get $$$$.  East of LA, maybe look at Los Coyotes or Calif CC?  Again they are not the greatest but won't break the bank.

Unfortunately, you will not find the quality that you had back east for the same money.

Welcome to LA. You are right, public golf around LA has issues. As you may or may not know by now, while most private clubs require sponsorship, many clubs, especially those without a waiting list can help you find a sponsor. Contact the membership director. Introduce yourself. Your type of 'new to the city and don't know many people' situation happens often.

You can google or search on here to get a list of private clubs in the under 6 figure club. There's not many. You can go north to the valley or south toward long beach.

Have you played all the higher end public courses in the area? What about down in OC? what about a private course are looking for exactly that these higher end public courses lack?

It's already September, while you look for a private club, consider playing the higher end public courses in the Palm Springs area. It's a 2 hour drive. but come December, the golf there should be fantastic.

From west La you can hardly get anywhere in an hour.

I’d say based on reputation:

1. mountain gate. Up the 405, 27 holes, seems reasonable price

2. Wilshire CC. More into mid LA, great track. Price I think reasonable vs reputation.

all the other ones nearby are tough ins AND big money.

Agreed on Mtg Gate but I don't think Wilshire is in the reasonable (depends in if you think mid to high 5 figures - might even be 6 figures?? - initiation is reasonable) range?  Op was looking for something that doesn't require sponsorship and was not crazy expensive.  Wilshire definitely requires sponsorships and is not exactly affordable (relatively speaking compared to others in LA it is but not based on what Op was looking for).  I love WCC and agree with you on if you were choosing on reputation and would join in a second if I could afford it.

You’re totally right, overlooked that part of his post.

San Gabriel CC.
Oakmont CC.
Virginia CC.
Annandale CC. Might be too much $$$

El Cab CC. $$$???

Valencia CC.
Glendora CC.

Virginia definitely requires sponsorship and is $$$$ - Oakmont is a great idea & I'd add Saticoy CC to this list as well.  Depends on where OP is based though.  Oakmont is not doable from the Westside

Not sure where you are in LA.  I know some guys in the Valley who go out to Saticoy.  Pretty nice track with better value than clubs in the city

Check out Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights. One of the best tracks around but I’m biased. FYI - we are closed a few weeks for overseeding.

Breamar should be on your list, not my favorite course but a pretty good practice facility and not overly pricy. Just over the hill from West LA, so it is pretty much there or mountaingate

Braemar CC is a good call - depending on where you are coming from on Westside it can an hour or more though (less if coming from SM area).  I'm in MB and it took me well over an hour to get there the lone time I played it.  Agreed on the course - didn't love it (if you want to see videos of course/practice area check out older videos of Mr Shortgame on YouTube - he used to be a member there before moving to GA).  It's tight and hilly with a lot of blind shots but it's affordable and kept in good condition.

I am late to this thread but there are a few in the Conejo Valley/ Thousand Oaks area not yet mentioned. Sunset Hills ( belonged there years ago),  Wood Ranch, North Ranch to name 3. I left So. Cal. A long time ago but these were OK at the time. All within an hour of West LA depending on where in that area you live, and on traffic of course.
