Biggest beating you've taken/given in match play

Recommended Posts

Few years ago in the club championship, straight up, I beat a guy 8 & 6 after making EVERYTHING.

Got that handed to me over the weekend playing a buddy. Giving him 7 shots (yes, I know, net). Guys shoots a 37 on the front on me, and I'm down 5 at the turn. I lost 7&6 (I did win the back tho).

Lost 6&5 the day after shooting 67 and being medalist in stroke play qualifying.  I was probably 8 over when I got closed out. Lost 5&4 in the state match play to a 15 year old. I was 2 under and he mentioned that his mom wasn’t due to pick him up for another hour since we ended so early.

Won my share of matches, but never put the beat down on anyone in a formal tournament. I think 3&2 is the earliest I’ve ended a match in an actual tournament.

Nothing too crazy. In a team event i've won 6 and 5.....This year in our club's match play i won my opening match 5 and 4

My biggest loss was probably my first interclub, i shot 42 on the front and someone was -1. I ended up shooting 32 on the back but he still beat me 6 and 5 i want to say. I actually came back to halve one guy and beat the other outright

One match play tournament a club I used to belong to ran it off of number of entrants. So as an 8 cap at the time, I was lucky enough to secure the 16th seed in the A flight which was played straight up. The number one seed was some kid who played for I think it was Rollins College. I played pretty well shooting a 2 over 38 on the front but he shot an easy 29 and I lost on ten 10&8. That kid waxed me! Best I’ve ever done is winning a match 5&3.

A few good ones:

Beat a guy after the 10th hole in a 18 hole match.

One guy quit after 15 holes of a 36 hole CC final.

Beat another in a CC final 11 up.

Fourball partner and I were giving 11 pops to a guy who shot 38 on the front.  I think we were gross under par but down 5 at the turn.  Lost 5 and 4.  Frustrating experience when we are hitting 7 irons into par 3's and they are hitting drivers rolling it up the front and making easy pars.

I haven't had a terrible loss yet - it's usually come down to the last hole or two. The "best" win is actually disappointing. The person I was playing had an extremely bad day. Their swing was gone and they couldn't do much to get to the green. We were about the same handicap, so there weren't really any strokes to help out. They conceded the match early into the back 9. I don't recall what the score was at the time but I know that I was doing well for my handicap.

I once "Took a guy to Kirby." If you don't know that golf expression, you should -- it's beating someone +9+7+5+3+1 on the front nine of a match where there are 2-down auto presses. Why Kirby? Because 97531 is the Zip Code of Kirby, Washington. I will never forget the first time I heard that term. From the moment I heard it, I knew I one day wanted to take someone there! 😉

I shot 32 and he shot 42 and I beat him 9-straight holes on the front. Still have the card somewhere. It was at Hesperia Country Club back in the early 2000s.

As far as my worst whoopin'? Probably 6 and 5 (or thereabouts) in a real match that mattered. You play long enough and you are bound to get your butt kicked sometimes...

11-under par through 13 holes? I hope he was smart enough to keep playing because that round has 50s written all over it.

If I remember correctly the guy who beat him had already broken 60 a few times, so I think he was more interested in getting to the bar afterwards

Unreal standard!

After having won club championship in the year prior, in extras- had a guy join club and announce that he was going to “go on a championship winning streak like MJ”.  I beat him 7 and 6 in first round, repeated as champ, and later gave him a Wizards tumbler to replace the Bulls one he used on course. Guy had a great sense of humor about it and used it for years.

The very next year, I lost in first round 6 and 5 🤦‍♂️that’s golf

I got trounced 6 & 5 in the NC amateur back in my younger years.  I didn't play bad, I think I was 1 under, but the guy I played looked that day like he should be on tour.  My buddy played him the next round and I followed along and my buddy beat him 4 & 3.  The opponent looked completely different than when I played him.

Biggest win is in fourballs team, we won 7&6.  My partner had no bogies and three birdies, I had four birdies and an eagle, and two doubles, LOL.   Biggest individual is 5&4, I lost the first, won the second with bird, holed out for eagle on the third for a win (after he hit his approach to three feet) and a par on 4 got a win.  Went to the ninth one up and won 9,10,11,12.  Tied 13 with par, won 14 and closed out the match.
