For those of you who transitioned from Ping Prodi G irons in the last 12 months....what did you move on to? My sons transition will start soon.

Hello golfing parents, my 12-year-old has reached another golf milestone which is transitioning to adult clubs.  I'm looking to start the transition now since our season is now coming to an end up here in Canada.  I'm just curious as to what irons/shafts your kids moved into.  Liek the title states my son is playing the Ping Prodi G irons but at the top end of the bag he's playing Cobra Ltdx driver/fairway/ hybrids with senior flex shafts.

If hes spending any significant amount of time playing get him fitted (at bare minimum a superstore) every swing is different what works for my kid wont work for yours, but beware hes coming into the growing stage, how fast he outgrows whatever you get will depend on growth rate and swing progression.

I've actually done two different fitting here in town.  The biases of the respective fitters were an issue for me.  One wanted him in super game improvement type heads just chasing distance and the other wanted more player'ish heads.  I wasn't able to pull either of them away from their biases.  My son is a decent player (7.2 hdcp), but very average distance wise.  He's working on distance but he isn't full on chasing it.  He's more focussed on short game right now and putting.  Sadly the fitters around here don't have a tonne of junior experience.

A lot of information here:  https://thejuniorgolfer.com/best-golf-clubs-for-teens-and-juniors-transitioning-to-adult-irons/

IMHO, I would ask what club(s) does your junior like?  They are the one that has to stand over the ball.  How the club head appears to their eye is what inspires (or does not inspire) confidence.  Given his handicap, sounds like he is a good player. I'd be looking at something like a players cavity back iron.  Perhaps something like Cobra Forged Tec, Cobra MIM Tour, Ping i500/525,  or Titleist T200's.

We have not made the move to adult clubs for my kid (turns 12 in December), but those are what we are likely going to look at. Others in this forum probably will have some good input as well.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

My son went to Wilson V6’s at 12, later Cobra Forged, and then Titleist T100.  He’s on a second set of T100’s.  For whatever reason his ball striking seemed to greatly improve when he went to the V6’s and he became addicted to the feel and control.  He wasn’t long and about a 3-4 HDCP back then.  Plenty of times he’d be playing in junior tournaments hitting a 5 wood into a green and the older guys were hitting an iron, but he’d be on the green and they’d be chipping.  What I’ve seen is some think chasing distance via speed training, some think grow into it by working on strength and flexibility and some try a little of both.  My son says he’s seen friends chase speed via speed training and their ball striking suffered, so he completely changed his diet and works on strength and flexibility.  He’s much, much longer now as a sophomore playing D1 golf.  I’d be more worried about what your son likes after he’s hit different ones and getting the proper fit.  Its smart to be working on his short game.  I’ll admit to being surprised when my son was being recruited.  He shot good scores and won a few times, but he was shorter off the tee.  I essentially asked the coaches why they were interested in my son.  Everyone of them said pretty much the same: “it’s his hands around the green”, “he’ll grow and get longer”, “you don’t have your A game every round, you need to be great around the greens.”
