San Diego “golf trip” last week of October

Buddy and I have a conference in San Diego and wanted to get in a round of golf during the last week of October. Torrey seems like it’s booked solid; otherwise that would’ve been our course of choice.

Any suggestions for a mid-week round?

I just got back from SD this morning (was there for work) but snuck in a round while we were there. We ended up playing Maderas which was about a 35 minute drive from the airport, but the course was in incredible condition. It's pricey ($230 on Saturday), and its difficult, but I really enjoyed it. Every hole is unique and the conditions were fantastic. The course is hilly, the greens are fast and roll really true, and they are giving the course plenty of water. Our second day we had a meeting in Newport so we ended up playing Monarch Bay in Dana Point but that was about an hour drive and not worth the trip IMO. I've played Coronado, which was fun and much cheaper, but not nearly as nice as Maderas and really crowded. Torrey is cool, but equally pricey and as you said likely booked up at this point. I know you can go day of and get on a waitlist if people no-show if that's a course you really want to play - someone with local experience can probably tell you more. I've played La Costa which was great, but as of August you have to either be a member or stay at the hotel there. We were considering Aviara as well but they are repairing 2-3 holes and are only playing the other 15 for the time being so we passed on that. We also considered Rancho Bernardo which I haven't played but it looked like they just punched this week. If you go Maderas just remember it can be a bit of a grind with its difficulty but the course is quite nice.

I'd second Coronado. It's a cool spot that you should be able to get on fairly easily.

i'll be in Carlsbad next week and will have a chance to squeeze 18 in the morning

not taking my clubs with me so id be renting, anyone has any recommendations on courses? Ill be solo, options im considering:

The Crossings

If you're in Carlsbad, just play the Crossings. Maderas can be tough to get to from there.

Crossings is in Carlsbad so most convenient. Arrowood is in Oceanside and another potential option.

Played Maderas this morning. The price tag stung ($275 after tax) but views and conditions were top notch. Some of the pin locations seemed a little too tricked up but that’s my only complaint other than my score.

tried to play the crossings last wed afternoon, i showed up with no tee time in hope of finding a slot.... no luck, course was packed

spend some time in the range and putting green... was testing a new scotty i got at the gallery the day before

went on friday to torrey pines and they had a lot of open slots to play South, must have been because of the sand they just laid on the greens

a group of 4 showed up to play south, they were told of the sandy greens and were offered a change to North right there in the spot, thought that was cool
