New Bag Specs Course Depending

Been doing tons of different bag setup testing. Somehow (and thankfully) it didn't effect my competitive play this summer. Bought and sold more clubs than ever this year, mostly wedges and clubs in the #5-3 range below. Here's how I'm looking going into the Fall and Florida winter vacays.

Unless you play on widely varying courses, I suggest you consider a Sweet 16 limit. Too many clubs can be a lot to manage.

Below is my normal bag mix. For possible 15th and 16th:

* Swap out 54* S-grind for W-grind if I play a course with really fluffy sand.

* Swap out 4H for 4i... but I no longer have a 4i and haven't found a replacement. It had been refitted with a graphite shaft and used as driving iron. Lately I've learned - more or less - to hit a stinger with a 4W, keep it low and hot.

I haven't played in Florida, but this is advice from former small-college player whose team did spring breaks in Florida. If the turf is thin, he played his fairways at 17* and 20* to help with launch. If turf had more cushion, he downlofted to 15* and 18*.

So, for the three question marks, consider adjustable 3W and 5W, and maybe a driving iron to keep things low when needed.

On wedges, you have a 60* LW, so this should help you over lip of steep greenside bunkers. I played in Myrtle Beach one year with a 58* LW, and it wasn't quite enough loft for some quick-up bunker shots.

Good ideas! I actually have a bunch that can and do fill that spot below. It's almost easier in FL playing at 7k plus. In the northeast we get stuck at those 6700 yardages where everything is squeezed in or the length is hidden in the par 3s

-TSi2 16.5

-g425 17.5

-TSi1 23 hybrid

-New Level 18* driving iron

-u85 20 and 23 driving irons

-g425 19* hybrid

Just curious -- could you share your carry distances on each of those clubs?

I ask because I've had a G425 5 wood in the bag in the past, have a TSR2 16.5 on the way for my 4W-7W set-up, and have an open spot in the bag that I've thought about devoting to a tee-only club like a driving iron. (And New Level makes one for lefties!) Just thought it'd be a good point of reference.

Driver: Titleist TSR2 9* | testing shafts

4 Wood: Titleist TSR2 | Graphite Design Tour AD UB 7X

7 Wood: Ping G425 Max | Graphite Design Tour AD DI 8X

(Currently testing options to slot in here.)

Irons: Srixon ZX4 5 iron, ZX5 6-7, ZX7 8-PW | Nippon Modus 120X

Wedges: Callaway Jaws Raw 50/10S, 54/12W, 60/8Z | Nippon Modus 130S

Putter: Bettinardi Queen B 6

At this point I’ve got 15 clubs. A driving iron interchangeable with a hybrid. The hybrid is very new, but when I get comfortable flighting it down I’ll probably fully retire the driving iron. As much as I like it it’s kind of a one-trick pony and a flighted down hybrid handles that shot as well as the normal higher hybrid shot.

I’ve imposed a 16 club limit, so only 2 extra things I can change, different 3 iron and a 2 iron. 2i gets swapped with the 5 wood and I swap my pxg 3i for the 3i that matches my set as I don’t need two driving irons at the same time. used to change my wedge setup but it just gets too complicated trying to figure out what would be best, so just 2 setups now.

Setup 1                                 Setup 2

D                                           D

3w                                        3w

5w                                        2i

3 driving iron                       Set 3i

4i etc.                                   4i etc.

moral of the story don’t make it too complicated lol

A bit difficult for me to say exactly as I'm someone that hits driver everywhere remotely possible. If not I hit the NLU 18* or 4iron.

I probably fly 19* g425 hybrid about 250 so I'd go off that. the Tsi2 16.5 I'd say carries 275

I really only change the top end of my bag depending on the wind.  Irons and wedges are a basic known in how they will perform, and can be manipulated (as much as my skill can) to fit most scenarios.

Regular conditions I'll have my 10.5* LTDx (open to 9*), windy I'll bring in a Sim 8* that I open up.  Regular fairway is a TS2 16.5* (set to 15.75*), windy I'll bring in a 14* Sim or 13* TEE E8 Beta.  Regular hybrid is a 19* TS3 where as if it is windy I'll bring out an 18* ZU85 DI.

I've messed around with lots of sets of irons, but I generally stick to ones based around 45*-46* PW and then run my usual 50/54/58 wedges.  Only if I bring out an older set based off of a 48* PW will I change up to a 52*/58* set up and usually add in the DI at the top of the bag.
