The joy of being the "A" player in a 4-man scramble and only using 20% my shots!

Recommended Posts

Last night we had our final 9-hole 4-man scramble of the year.  I am the "A" guy as these are all handicap weighted to have similar total handicaps; I am a 6, which is the lowest on the team. We had a couple of 12's and a 17.  The teams are generated via computer and are new each week.

Anyways, you know your team is coming through when the "A" guy is only using 20% of their shots!  I counted 5 of mine that we took: a 125-yard gap wedge to a good spot, a 30-foot putt to within 2 feet, a roughly 300 yard drive in the right side of the fairway, a 310 yard drive in the left side of the fairway, and a short-sided chip over a bunker with our backs against the wall (and the other 3 players having landed in that bunker and the team needing a birdie for the win)  Over 9 holes, that was all!  The other 3 people came through with clutch shots; I am probably more consistent but someone always seemed to knock their 100 yard shot to within 3 feet or drain a birdie putt.  I didn't always have to putt as we had already finished the hole, but it was impressive how consistent our team was and how someone always seemed to step up with a great shot at just the right moment.

We shot a 29 for a par 36 and took home the $160 jackpot.  Woo hoo; I am really proud of these guys.

You know things are going badly, on the other hand, when you are the A player and every shot is yours.

I played in a 3-man scramble once where the total handicap was 30 (me + a 15 and a 14) and i didn't have to putt once.

We used every one of my approach shots (i hit 18 greens) and these guys both were possessed by some sort of demon on the greens.

we shot -13 and had a 6 shot lead going into day 2 LOL.....ended up winning like 6 hundy

??? How if you hit all 18 greens and only shot 13 under did you not have to putt?

Yeah i would've had to putt, i think what i meant more was the i never putted anything stressful. Like there were a few cases where i putted a 25 footer for a tap-in. But all of the 5-10 foot type things never made it to me because they were holing them

Ahh  as I suspected.  I used to play in a 4 man Post Office scramble team.  there was no Cap limitations and TWO members had to be Postal employees.  I was an 8 cap at the time and was the "D" player. We never lost. One we played we had never seen the course before playing.  We finished 19 under.   Another we would play in every year and never did not win changed the format to a best ball after we had registered.  Well that did not matter.  Our "A" player was 6 under on the front nine.  When we came in and told them we were -15 they reminded us the form at was best ball not scramble.  We said good thing coz that's what we played.  Always fun playing as a "D" as an 8 capper.
