eBay sucks and PayPal saved the day (shocker)!

This is a somewhat lengthy post. This happened to me a couple of months ago, but just thought I’d share my experience. I had purchased an Edel SMS wedge head on the bay. Pics showed it was in mint condition. Good price. Seller has good reputation (not a lot of golf stuff), and sold one other SMS head so I pulled the trigger. $96 after all was said and done.

Got the head and took it to my club builder. He instantly said “there’s something off. The hosel is too big and no shaft will fit it. I think it’s a fitting head.” I emailed Edel about it and was contacted by Malachi who confirmed that yes it was a fitting head. He did some research on the seller and found the location of them and confirmed that it was from a fitting set that was stolen from a GolfTech. Edel asked if I’d be willing to send them the head back and I’m turn they were going to sell me a wedge at cost.

I emailed the seller and told him that the property he sold was stolen property (I included the email from Edel) and that I was going to send the wedge head back to the original owners. The seller said that was fine as he didn’t want to deal with stolen property. So I started the return process through eBay and sent the wedge head back to Edel.

ebay stated “since I didn’t send the item back to the seller, they would not issue me a refund” despite me showing them the email from Edel and the conversation from the seller saying that was okay. So I filed a dispute w/ paypal with the exact same information and they found in my favor and refunded me. I’m shocked because eBay and PayPal are pretty much 2 sides of the same coin. And kudos to Edel for their customer service in this regard too.

tl:dr - eBay does eBay things but PayPal is the lesser of 2 evils at times.

eBay is a crapshoot as to what the’ll do 99.99999% of the time. Common sense understanding isn’t something I’d bank on when dealing with those jokers. Been on both sides of the coin. Glad it worked out for you!

Did the seller agree in writing to give you a refund without getting the head back? I hope that's the case... You initiated a return and didn't send the head back, so of course eBay isn't going to set you up for a refund. That's normal.

Yes I had it in the conversation on eBay with him that he was okay with me sending the head back to eBay and giving me a refund.

From what I heard awhile ago, Ebay sold Paypal so they are not part of Ebay anymore!  If that is what you meant by "eBay and PayPal are pretty much 2 sides of the same coin"!

I was unaware of that. I just assumed that eBay still owned PayPal as they did before but doing a little research shows you are correct. That’s what my statement was about.

I had an experience where a dishonest seller sent me the wrong item and then gave a fake return address to return the item.  Then ghosted me.  Even though the item had never been returned to the vendor, all it took was a 15 minute online chat with an eBay rep and I had my refund.  I did have all the emails etc... so that made it cut and dried.

That being said, eBay does very little to ban fraudulent sellers, even when they know that the person is a scammer.  They would rather just give out money than get rid of the bums.

I don't get it.. If the seller had agreed for you to send the head back to Edel, the seller could have easily send you the refund. Why did you have to file for refund with eBay? I don't think eBay is in the wrong here as the refund should have come from the seller.

Great question. I assumed that’s what was supposed to happen, but he told me just to request a refund. Maybe he

was being shady and knew that it wouldn’t go in my favor and just banked on me taking the loss. He did p1ss me off because once I filed the dispute he went quiet.

On eBay, do everything by the book when it comes to refunds and returns.  If the seller ghosts you, then it's time to escalate the issue and get eBay involved.  Once the time period for the seller to respond passed, all it took was a 15 minute online chat session to get my money back.  Sucks that time ticks by and you are in limbo for that time.

Yeah you always want to go through the normal channels with that stuff so there is the "proper" paper trail in case anything goes sideways.

As for the OP, i'm glad the PayPal side of things stepped in for you. It's just the unfortunate nature of the types of rules that have to exist with peer to peer big business. The refund policy of eBay needing to confirm that the item was sent back to the verified address of the owner obviously makes sense, because otherwise you could just send it anywhere and claim either the shipper messed up, it was the address the seller gave you, or any number of other stories that eBay themselves don't have the time or manpower to investigate. And that is what it comes down to, because unfortunately you have to think like a scammer to understand the rules, not as an honest broker, otherwise they won't make sense. Messages can be easily doctored if you sent them to eBay in your initial correspondence, and if they access the actual accounts to sift through the messages on both sides of the transaction (time consuming) they still can't prove who was in control of those accounts at what time and thus can't verify the authenticity of the messages etc etc. It goes on and on in terms of how scammers will attempt to cheat the system, steal product and/or money, or even use it as a medium for money laundering. You didn't do anything wrong, just ran into a rule that needs to exist to deal with the types of bad actors that they can't ignore.

Yup.  When sending emails to the seller, you should use the eBay message system.  That way there is a verifiable trail for eBay to see when it all goes South.
