Best feel in the 120g to 130g iron shaft realm?

I literally just went from a modus 105S to a True Temper Tour Issue X100 today.

There is a different in weight but in a good way. I'm similar to you in that I got fitted with the 105S 3 years ago. since then I've practiced lots and my speed has increased to the point I've gained 15 yards but was also started hooking my irons 15-20 yards left. The swing weight of the x100 is such that I feel the club head more so I'm feeling more controlled in my downswing when I'm swinging faster. I felt like at high speeds, the 105S felt like there was no control. My arms were erratic because I couldn't really feel the club head.

For reference my 6 iron carries 190-195. Ball speed is 130-132 mph

When I switched today, I was still hooking the x100 left 15-20 yards but I could immediately feel what I was doing in my swing which caused the hook while the modus 105S felt so light that I couldn't really feel anything. It was easier to straighten the shot out after practicing.

Very similar to me. I tested out an S300 at golf galaxy the other day before they got mad because I go in there on occasion and hit balls and test different gear. I liked it a lot paired with zx7. Their numbers were way off on their trackman though. I shouldn’t be surprised.

Do you have A smooth or aggressive transition ?

Early or late release?

looking for higher or lower ball flight?

More spin or lower spin?

is your miss left or right? Push -slice - draw - hook?

Moderate to aggressive.

early

mid to low

slice to the right of my sequencing/feel is off. Sometimes I hook if I go to strong in my grip and bend the trailing wrist to much.

Try the DG 120 X100

very smooth shaft and brings the balls flight way down.

oban CT 125 may also be worth consideration . They handle early release really well.

Have you considered KBS C-Taper 120S? Handles aggressive transitions very well.

I have a very aggressive transition, but late release. I gravitate towards the modus 130 or DG X100 and the 120 x100 or the KBS Tour V. can’t hit the Oban well to save my life.

I find the DG a good middle ground for many swing types. I also thing the transition to 120g instead of straight to 130-133g will be smoother. Later in the round the heavier shafts can be tiring if you are not used to them.

I swung today and was definitely more moderate. X100 is a high consideration. C taper lite was a shaft I was fit for when I was swinging a 6i 80mph. They put me in a regular. Now I’m around 90-95 I think, sending the 6i about 200 yards if I really step on it. The modus 105 s and the DG 105 S300 aren’t bad shafts for me but I tend to chunk and have deep divots. I tried the 120s out with a ZX7 which is heavier than new levels and found that I still chunked but with the ti s300 I had solid contact ball after ball.

a guy had a set of new levels on sale with modus 125s that are .25 short so I am curious what that will do for me. They are arriving tomorrow and I’m playing a round in the afternoon so I’m very curious.

c taper feels really good in 130 though the x100 TI and S300 TI felt best to me.

im finding in the same instance, I am having trouble turning over my rogue St max with a ventus black 6S so I am swapping out to a ventus blue TR which is what I have in my hybrid and woods. Thus, I’m super curious if that will help me not hit my driver right. My slice is mean though. Literally goes about 150 and then does a 90 degree turn and goes another 100. I would be a 300 yard guy if I could just get it straight. About 1/5 go straight amd my grip is so strong that time trailing elbow is under the shaft. That’s not good. But it works kinda if I don’t get too far under it.

How come the modus 130 vs the 125

Modus 130 have a very stable and stiff  mid and butt, but a soft tip to help with my late release. But it keeps the spin lower. I get a higher ball flight then with the x100 shafts, but it’s a flatter trajectory to a higher peak. Then It drops nice a soft.

the 125 is more a mid bend even profile. I spin the 115/125 line up way to much and lose distance. It then launched to high and peaks to early.

If you like that profile but fight a slice try the CK Pro Blue. The X or TX in a 70 would surprise you.

also try the GD DI 7S or X.

I fight a slice and hit my best shots with a baby fade. These shafts really help control it.

I’m not familiar with the abbreviations. What are they?

I had thought the 125 would be most similar to my modus 105 which I love.

Yes… the 125 would be e good fit if you love the 105. Even try the 115. That whole lineup is a similar profile. The 115 is about 118-120g. The 125 is 128-132g.

the 130 would most likely not. E a good fit for you.

Yeah the modus 120 was not a good fit.

sweet. I’ll check those out. I’m probably starlit by the ventus marketing and hype which I’m easily susceptible too. Project x HZDRUS black was a good shaft.

Surprised no one said plain ol KBS Tour 130. I recently started playing them and from a feel perspective they’re hard to beat. 130 and a slightly higher balance point so at +.5” my swing weights don’t get all crazy high. The only thing I have noticed is theirs is a little propensity to go left which I think is because they are a bit softer than other 130g shafts, which is why they feel so good.

I did mention KBS Tour.  It's one of the best feeling steel shafts on the planet IMO.  Thing is, it matches a smaller percentage of golfers who have a ton of speed since it's higher spinning and launching.

That’s my only issue as I already spin the ball too much. Hence Dg x100 s300 and then the modus 105 and 125 are a tad better.

I mentioned it last week, too. For me it’s lower/lower than $ Taper and pretty much the same as X100 in terms of launch, but with slightly higher spin. I really, really like it.

Depends on who you talk to... Tour is lower/lower than $ Taper for me and my local Titleist guy finds that holds true for most players, too. Looking at their website, it looks like Titleist think of the Tour as low/mid launch, low spin and the $ Taper as low launch, low/mid spin. I get too much spin with $ Taper and it launches higher than Tour. I know other club makers view the $ Taper is lower/lower than Tour, and I know some players also get that outcome.

Tour V is the interesting one in their mix for me - low/low, 120G weight in X flex - or 125G S+ in the Tour Spec version... which I wasn't able to demo and as such didn't refit my irons with. I don't like the feel (or lack thereof for me) of the C Taper.

Tour versus X100 - for me, Tour is higher spin but similar low launch. I probably would have gone with X100's if I had T100 irons but the stronger lofts of the T100S keeps spin down and make the Tour a nicer feeling fit. I think. Hard to tell - and realistically, out on the course for someone at my level, I can pretty much guarantee similar scores with either shaft. A few hundred RPM here or there isn't really a deal breaker.

Really good to know. Sounds like a tester shaft for sure. I’m still toying around with the modus and I get good results from modus 105 and DG 105 S300 but my miss is because I lose the shaft in the downswing if I’m too aggressive with my backswing. Which happens standing over the ball.

For me the $-taper launches lower and spins about the same as the Tour.  Different delivery into the ball I suppose.

Hello there. Looking for y’all’s opinion on the best shafts in the 120g to 130g weight range. Currently using modus 105 stiff though I’ve recently increased my speed to around 90 mph so considering going heavier to help with transition and knowing where the head of the club is on my downswing.

Nothing better than the C-Taper 130, imo. The 125 S+ is nice for something a touch softer. Plus, when you bend the tips, you can buy a new set. We all seem to like shopping!

Purely feel wise, I think it's hard to beat the KBS Tour shaft. I used DG X100 for years, it is a great product no doubt. Currently I am in a Modus 125 which seems good.

Not sure how people are recommending C-Taper as the best feeling shaft.  It's the harshest feeling shaft I've ever hit.  Zero feedback, no idea if I hit the ball solid or an inch from center.  $Taper a bit better in that regard, but I'm also looking for OPs search.  Testing Modus 120x and 125x.  DG120 may be a little light, but may test it out anyways.

I was fit into the C-taper and I agree with you.  It's very harsh and can only be described as a telephone pole/rebar.  I got great numbers on trackman though.  Elbow and wrist pain happened so I had to move on after a few years.
