FANTASTIC FIELD IN STORE FOR KPMG WOMEN’S IRISH OPEN

20/09/2022
LeonaMaguire762.jpg

After a ten-year hiatus, the Ladies European Tour (LET) returns to Ireland this week with Dromoland Castle hosting the KPMG Women’s Irish Open.

The last Irish Open was held in 2012 with winning Solheim Cup captain Catriona Matthew triumphing with a one-shot victory over Suzann Pettersen

And the champion from 2012 is back this year and is one of the many LET winners getting ready to participate in the 72-hole stroke play competition with a prize fund of €400,000.

There will be 126 players teeing it up around the picturesque Dromoland Castle including Race to Costa del Sol number one and four-time LET winner Linn Grant

Seven of the top 10 in the 2022 Race to Costa del Sol will be aiming to add more points to their total with Sweden’s Johanna Gustavsson (third) and Argentina’s Magdalena Simmermacher (fifth) still on the hunt for their maiden LET titles.

While there are a winners aplenty from 2022 with Grant (Joburg Ladies Open, Mithra Belgian Ladies Open, Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed, Skaftö Open), Meghan MacLaren (Australian Women’s Classic – Bonville), Ana Peláez Trivino (Madrid Ladies Open), Manon De Roey (Aramco Team Series – Bangkok Individual), Tiia Koivisto (Jabra Ladies Open), Jana Melichova (Tipsport Czech Ladies Open), Anne-Charlotte Mora (Åland Ladies Open) and Liz Young (VP Bank Swiss Ladies Open) all hoping for more success.

Ireland will be well represented throughout the week and Solheim Cup star and LPGA Tour winner Leona Maguire headlines the home talent.

The 27-year-old, who hails from Cavan in Ireland, will be looking to put on an excellent performance in front of a home crowd.

But Maguire is not the only Irishwoman in the field with amateurs Olivia Costello, Kate Lanigan and Aideen Walsh all teeing it up, as well as four players from Northern Ireland too with amateurs Katie Poots, Rebekah Gardner, Marina Joyce Moreno and professional Victoria Craig all in the running.

Looking forward to this.

No Steph Meadow as she had to make the 'difficult' decision to play in Arkansas this week to further her CME status for this/next year (she's #77 at present).

Leona will experience an Irish version of what Brooke experienced at the Canadian Open, so it will be a massive effort if she was to win with all the attention and distractions, maybe too much but we'll see!?

That photo looks like the crowd watching her on the practice putting green.

Is it "Leona Henderson" or "Brooke Maguire"?

With all the attention and love, Brooke struggled at CP Women's Open this year.  What will Leona do!

She did ok as the only women's pro at the the big Irish charity Pro-Am event that Tiger and Rory played in a few month's ago, and this event is not a strong field with only E400k prizemoney. She commentated how intense the attention was on her in that Pro-am event, I guess she has now some idea of the scrutiny she will face in this event.

Linn Grant is her biggest challenger (Pia Babnik is 3rd favourite, so that indicates field depth) but Leona's form is spotty at best having missed last week's Cre cut.

One thing Leona does the best is to go from "spotty" to "Sublime" from round to round and tournament to tournament.

Interesting putters/long grips this week, eg. Annabel Dimmock's wristlock Taylormade Spider GT (the "crab").

... and Leona Maguire's Wristlock lengthened putter grip?

This is great viewing on the R4 last nine with Leona on the charge with the crowd in tow and so many with a chance:

I watch Annabel and think good on her for trying anything but it looks just ready to stuff up at any turn.

Leona has used that grip for 2 seasons but with a traditional right below left grip 80% of the time (did use left below right for part of her 'first' rookie season in 2020 when she won one of the putting categories on the LPGA).

A repeat of Maguire's "7 birdies in final ~8/10 holes" would make this super interesting!

She almost chipped in on 15, now has a putt to tie the lead, sorry to tie 3rd one behind.

She eagled 16 last round, so who knows?

Slightly pulled her birdie putt so a miss, might now be a stroke or 2 shy but we'll see, 6 other players in front of her.

Sad for Annabel Dimmock missing that short putt on 18 to make the play off (but that putting style....)

3 way playoff, Leona missed by 1 after birdieing 18.

Anyone's guess as to who wins.

@JungleJimbo who is your pick to win?

I have absolutely no confidence in any of the 3, none are seasoned winners.

I'll go with Klara, only because of her short game.

Klara wins, no great surprise that the superior short game gets it done in a play-off.

Interestingly she was previously sponsored by KPMG a couple of years ago along with the Maguire twins, Maria Stackhouse and of course Stacy Lewis. They dropped her and now she has won this KPMG event.

Really pleased Klara has won.  Have followed her for a few years expecting a win.  Sad for Annabel Dimmock (local to us and really good with the juniors so my girls are fans) but good to see her up on the leaderboard.  They would have been my two choices (although actually thought Leona would win) at start of week so not a bad overall outcome.

@Rapidcat sorry for late reply... I didn’t manage to stay awake for the playoffs.

Amazed at your stamina (must’ve been ~3am in Oz for you?).

Being in Oz you just have to forego sleep if you want to watch world sports events live and it was worth it this time!

Check out our front page launch stories here and here.

What you need to know: For the first time, carbon is the most prevalent material by volume in a TaylorMade driver, and more carbon equals better performance, says the company. Last year, TaylorMade debuted a 60X Carbon Twist Face. With TaylorMade Stealth 2, engineers are bringing carbon to more of the golf club — and unveiling a new-and-improved Carbon Twist Face in the process. Stealth 2 Plus (low spin, most workable) Stealth 2, and Stealth 2 HD (draw bias, high launch, most forgiving) drivers make up the Stealth 2 family.

What you need to know: Breakthrough movable weight technologies and versatile designs are the hallmarks of the 2023 TaylorMade Stealth 2 fairway woods. Stealth 2 Plus is branded as “three fairway woods in one” owing to the unique performance characteristics afforded by the 50-gram sole weight. Stealth 2 features a slightly lower profile 3D carbon crown than Stealth. This moves CG down and away from the toe with more weight in the rear of the club for higher launch and MOI. Ultra-high MOI Stealth 2 HD features an oversized 200cc head and low-profile sole, creating an easy-to-hit, draw-biased club.
