Trip to North Carolina - Need Advice

BG5

Recommended Posts

Gents,

I plan to take a trip to North Carolina and wanted to see if I am playing the right courses and if I should take something off and replace it with another track.  I dont know much about NC golf but I had planned to play the following...

1.  Pinehurst #2

2.  Pine Hurst #4

3. Tobacco Road

4. Pine Needles

5.  Mid Pines

Am I missing any other great courses in the area?  Anything on this list I should take off?

Any advice would be great

Those are the big ones. Some people will say southern pines should be added but I wouldn't take any of those other courses off for it.  Pinehurst #8 is also great but would rank below the courses you have listed as well.  The only thing I'll say is budget for a long day at tobacco road.  Rounds there can be 5 plus hours and you wanna be able to enjoy the full experience.

I would also add the cradle if you're gonna be at pinehurst.

Not 100% sure, but I think you have to stay at the resort to play #2 and #4. Their rates are not cheap.

This is the way I understand it as well.  You could do a 2-day stay at the Resort, then move to someplace less expensive for the remainder.  I know that Talamore can book all of the remaining courses, Tobacco Road Travel, or you could stay at MidPines or Pine Needles.

Yeah, unless you have somebody you know there (better hook than a member), you're gonna have to stay.  I thought you could take a gamble and show up day-of early and just wait around for a single to cancel or something (not likely), but it may just be you 100% have to stay there.  That said, I hear other resorts around there have some access to times too, so you might not have to stay AT actual Pinehurst resort.  But, I can't be 100% certain.

You have to stay at pinehurst resort to play 2 and 4. That change occurred a year or two ago.

Look into the Donald Ross package. 2 nights with 3 rounds including breakfast and dinner. #8 is probably the 3rd best but I wasn’t impressed. Nothing says you actually have to play that third round. Rack rate for 2 and 4 are $475. Pinehurst off season is very affordable. Pinehurst during peak season is quite pricey.

By all accounts southern pines is worth a play. Dormie Club is good too if you have any private connections. Not sure when you’re going or if they still allow unaccompanied guest play.
