Adding scores (front 9 and back 9 played on different days) to make a full round.. Is this ledgit?

I play in Tuesday league after work.  Because the league starts in the evening, we only play 9 holes, we would switch front 9 and back 9 every other week.

Last year I shot 36 on front 9 and week later shot 36 on back 9.  So when someone asks me what's the best score I shot.. I want to say 72 (Combination of front 9 and back 9).

If not, my best score would be 74 (playing full round on the weekend)..

not legit for that purpose. Needs to be one complete, continuous round.

GHIN combines 9 hole rounds, but I don't when I'm thinking about my best round.

Last week the course I was playing had the back 9 closed, but I shot a really good score playing the front 9 twice. I wouldn't even claim that as a "round" because it's not playing the full course as it's designed. I've also had the same question about shotgun starts... if I shoot a great number starting on a hole other than 1 or 10, should I count it? I feel like it could impact how the course designer intended for the course to play.

GHIN will combine your 9 hole scores into 18 hole scores for handicap purposes. So that's legit in that sense.

As for trying to take two 9 hole rounds, and putting them together to call it your best score ever... me personally I wouldn't count that as my best 18 hole round, but you can do it however you choose. I've had a lot of 18 hole rounds where I started out great for the first 9, thinking today is the day I beat my personal best, and then the swing starts to tire a little on the back 9. I think if you wanna count it as your best 18, you need to grind out the full 18 holes all at once. But again, that's just me.

I feel the same way you do. I don't even like to count my round when they start me out on 10. I don't feel I am playing the course as designed.

I played a course I hadn't played in a few yrs. last week and they started us out on ten. I felt bummed out starting on ten. The back nine is tighter and more difficult. It takes me a while to get going and I like the fact the front nine is open. The front gives me time to find my groove without being punishing. I had my highest score on the back in quite some time and I blame that mostly on having to start out on the back.

GHIN combines 9’s in the order they are played. So that is legitimate.

But to say that two combined 9’s from different days is your personal best “score” is poppycock.

You can have a personal best 9 and a personal best 18. But you have to play all 18 for a personal best “round”. Combining 9’s isn’t “legitimate” for that purpose.

If one plays all 18, that’s a legitimate round. Doesn’t matter if you start on 2, 5, 18, or 10. They are 18 different tests. Add them up, total score.

GHIN actually allows for the combining of 9 hole scores so I’d say go for it.

This. But it sound like he’s asking if it’s ok to say the two rounds on separate days can allow him to tell people in conversation his best round is 72.  Which it wasn’t a round.  It was as you mentioned two nines combined for handicap purposes.

It’s like I hate it when I used to ask someone whst they shot snd they would tell me the ESC score 🤦

Sure. You can tell folks you shot X on those 9’s. And it can be your personal record for that “course”. AND since it’s 18 holes, a player could say that is his personal lowest score ever.

But he certainly can’t claim he shot X at that course unless he plays both 9’s, front and back, on the same day.

Totally legit dude, ignore the naysayers!

BTW, my best round ever is 26 under par (18 holes broken down into the  individual times I birdied or eagled them). I'm that good!

That nails it.  What the OP is suggesting is just a form of eclectic scoring.

The US and the UK handle 9 hole scores in different ways. As I understand it the US method is that the WHS 'stores' the first 9 and combines it with the next 9 that is played. In the UK a score for the 9 holes not played is calculated and combined the played 9 to produce an 18 hole score for that round.

Again, as I understand it there is no problem with shotgun starts. As long as the 18 holes have been rated the sequence played in doesn't matter

If it's only a 9 hole course, then I agree. I agree with you, I can't tell someone "I shot XX at Augusta" if I only played half the holes, even if I played them twice.

There are some advantages that come with playing the same set of holes a second time, like knowing the speed or breaks of the greens that you've already played once that day. I don't quite see that as fair for claiming a "best round".

My home club has two 18-hole courses. They are not the same as some years back as the order of the nines has been changed. Should I have stopped counting my rounds as the courses are no longer as designed originally?

I would still count those rounds. Even though they are not being played as they were designed any longer they are now being played each time (I hope) to the new layout..They changed the design.

There are a few courses I play that flipped starting on the front to the back. They are played that way every time. I have no problem getting use to the change. I feel it is a little different when you show up and just for today you are playing the course different. A few weeks ago I played a course that had all temp tees and they were way up. Yes I shot extremely well that day but I didn't feel counting it as my lowest score at the course as something to brag about and I won't count it as my best.

May one assume they give the guy net pars for the holes not played ?
